A minor correction - I'm sure that Frank probably had five poles out on the Wharf but I don't think he was actively fishing them himself - more likely they were his rentals because the California Department of Fish and Game regulations specifically limits the number of lines you can have in the water on a public pier (poles and/or crab nets) to just two. Anything more qualifies you as a rail hog subject to a hefty fine.

Uhhh, Stearns Wharf is, in fact, a pier. (But it is also a wharf in that boats can tie up at it and, as Little Toot, load and unload passengers.)

But what's NOT to do is feed the pelicans (or the gulls.) That pelican pictured in the link was removed from the pier because, although a juvenile (all brown), he was getting too aggressive with people, snapping at children --- not his fault, but it is what happens when people think they are being kind and pay no attention to the signs....
