I have read that the Mission is not only the most visited in SB, but the most visited tourist attraction in California. No?

The reason our mission is the only one not abandoned when Mexico took over California in 1821 is because Nicholas Den (owner of Rancho Dos Pueblos) and his father-in-law, Daniel Hill, leased the local mission lands from the Mexican Government. This included the mission so they let the priests keep it and ran cattle on the land. The other 20 missions were sold or given away and the fathers had no choice but to leave. There are many Den and Hill descendents still living in Santa Barbara.

Ah, the Mission. Such a lovely building. I can't ever think of it the same after a school tour revealed that underneath the lovely cemetery out back there's a mass grave with all the native American laborers who helped build it. Unmarked, naturally. Since they weren't catholic, therefore not worthy.

How much is the tour? Is there a senior citizen discount? Seemed a bit expensive when I was interested in visiting a few years ago.
