This also when Santa Barbara said no to the majority of tall buildings to replace this earthquake broken town. It needs to keep saying this.

My grandfather, one Allen Knickrehm who owned a successful house moving company in Los Angeles sits at his desk in 1924. After our earthquake he was called upon by unknown persons in Santa Barbara to drive up from LA to serve as a consultant...to see what could be done about earthquake-damaged buildings on State Street. As a house mover or building mover he would be able to give an expert's opinion about how to shore up a floor or foundation, or perhaps know if or how a building could be saved. He brought along his seven year old son in his truck, who lived to tell the tale of the trip to his daughter. That would be me, a current Santa Barbara resident.
Similar-sized buildings in Los Angeles were moved or repaired by the method shown in the picture. Those workers must have had confidence in their work since some are standing underneath the house or hotel.
Long thick boards were strategically placed under the structure, keeping it level. Mind boggling.

Thanks for honoring our military peace keepers who have and will continue to serve SB and America during its local, national, and global challenges.

Since the Fithian Bldg. survived the earthquake intact, I do wonder why they removed the entire 3rd floor and the beautiful clock tower it once had?

There's nothing wrong with tall buildings, ever been to Spain?, they have them there. It's too bad that this decision is seen as "historic" when it's not at all, it was a decision that was made not even a century ago, it's modern.

This is NOT when the decision to favor shorter buildings was made. That didn't occur until there was a proposal to build a 9-story senior housing project where Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden (the Park Park) was proposed, which was an inappropriate place for a tall building even when tall buildings were allowed, in 1972: Section 1506. Building Heights. Limitations. It is hereby declared the policy of the City that high buildings are inimical to the basic residential and historical character of the City. Building heights are limited to 30 feet in areas zoned for single-family and two-family residences; are limited to 45 feet in areas zoned for residences for three (3) or more families, for hotel, motel and office use; are limited to 60 feet in areas zoned for industrial, manufacturing and other commercial uses; and 30 feet for all other zones. The Council may, by ordinance, set limits of heights less than these maximums. The Council may, by ordinance, set up reasonable methods of measuring the heights set forth in this section. (Approved by election held November 7, 1972.)

I'm enjoying the Edhat print version as I did the Tues evening 9:15-or-so taped reprise of Neal's 2006 talk on Channel 18. I'm wondering if these photos in print were all included in that talk, since I'm seeing pictures here that I did not see in the Tues tape. Or perhaps they're the ones which were not shown while Neal was talking about them? Thanks, Neal, for your vast knowledge of SB History and your super writing and speaking abilities!
