THANK YOU! GREAT article. I look forward to the next. I don't ever recall reading any of this in 30 years of reading the SB News Press (when it really was a newspaper) or any of Tommy Tompkins articles though I'd suspect he wrote something on the earthquake history. Keep up the great articles and pictures!!!!

This is always such an excellent column. I love reading the history of SB and seeing the pictures especially. Does anyone know if there's a book of old photographs of Santa Barbara through the ages? It's pretty amazing to see how much our city has changed. Thanks for another excellent post!

Neal, Great piece as always. Do you know where I can a get a DVD of the 2-3 hour Santa Barbara historial video that sometimes also runs on Channel 18? You appear several times in it. Thanks! Brad

These photos are amazing to see! My grandparents were scheduled to be married in Santa Monica and honeymoon in the Arlington hotel the night of the earthquake, but had to delay their plans by one day, due to business reasons. They could easily have been among the casualties in the hotel.

To 85775: I'm currrently at work on "Santa Barbara Then & Now" (based on my slide show of the same name) which should be ready this fall - just in time for Christmas. To 85796: You can get a copy of "Impressions in Time" from City TV (Channel 18). Call City Hall and ask for City TV and they'll tell you what to do. - Neal

In response to Neal's first day story, Janet Whiteacre wrote: I so enjoyed the 1925 earthquake history lesson on edhat this morning. I was born and raised in SB and remember hearing many stories about the earthquake. I have a few photos that were taken by my dad (Elmer Dismuke). I am not certain of the buildings in the photos except for the Hotel Virginian (the sign is still standing). Feel free to share these photos with your readers, and thanks for helping to keep alive the memories of my childhood and my beloved hometown. link to the photos

Thank you, thank you! Keep the pictures and histories coming! I wish I'd had more appreciation for history when my parents and grandparents were still alive. Now I just absorb whatever I can get my hands on.
