As a junior high teacher...who watches kids who habve bizarre names...what are you thinking woman? Both names are terrible......James, your husbands pick is terrific and has many nick names. Listen to your husband, and quit being so manipulative!

Silly questions from a supposedly adult female. Guess we grow into our names so you could have a proper little didier someday. Eeeeeek.

Neither if you don't want your son humiliated. I actually think you can't go wrong with classic names like Emma and James. Don't you feel that there is something off about not sharing the gender with your husband??

Yes, maybe this letter is fictitious - who knows?

The French name Didier would be very difficult for a modern American boy - unless it is maybe a middle name. "James Didier" might work.

As a first name, it would be mispronounced and misspelled by most adults, and open the boy to teasing if any clever kid thought of "diddler", "did ya?" or derivatives. Ugh.

You don't have to like your in-laws, but heading into the team effort of raising a child with the little trick of "it's a secret but I cheated" doesn't bode well....

Comment 85576P, The manipulation I was referring to is that the woman admits to finding out the gender of the child, not telling the husband, and then making a deal about who names which gender....knowing full and well that she will get to name the child. Oh and being a Junior High Teacher scares lots of people....but I love what I do. I just hate watching students get teased for having names that are rediculous....James is a terrific name.

Interesting discussion, if you like watching train wrecks, which apparently is a national pastime these days. Your name choices are fine, but it doesnt matter anyway because your marriage doesnt sound on firm ground, and raising a child from birth is a tough gig even under the best of circumstances. Lets see, you dislike his family, he is traditional, and you are experimental, manipulative, sneaky and underhanded. Hmmm....Name the kid anything you'd like, he will change it in foster care anyways.....just sayin izzall...

When parents are choosing a name for an unborn child they need to giver more thought to the child's future than their own vanity. It is possible to compromise the desire to use historic family names (often via the rarely used middle name), but remember, by the time the child is old enough to learn of a popular ancestor (frequently deceased) it is often meaningless.

There was a time when parents from certain generations, as part of their overall rebellion against "the establishment" felt the necessity of shedding more traditional names for their children for what they thought were more "unique" names (possibly they were under the influence of drugs at the time). They rarely gave much thought about subjecting that child to future chagrin and even outright harassment.

There are lots of historic names that are famous and powerful but do you really think a young man given the name Spartacus, or a young girl named Cleopatra will make it through school and the rest of their life without problems (or in the current vernacular having "issues")?

is this a joke question or is this lady just pretty dumb? and I agree if this is for real....names are the least of your worries...your marriage foundation needs a lot of work. Good luck.

Wow, that's terribly deceptive... your marriage won't last long.

Call it "Confusion", after it's mother. Poor kid.
