I did a very similar trip (as a youngish man) back in 1998, with parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. I'll vouch for it as well.

I did a cruise a few years back from Vancouver to Whittier, AK (Port for Anchorage) on Princess with a balcony. Absolutely phenomenal, I did a number of things that the OP did in their pictures. The train up into the mountains and back into Canada was fantastic.

Be careful! Before you book...get some statistics on how many passengers have been sick or become sick on that cruiseline. Cruises are places where many illnesses lay in wait. My father became seriously sick from the food, and he is not alone. He continues to cruise...but he is cautious. Sometimes cheaper is not always better.

Floating ghetto petri dishes. Why would anyone put themselves in a extremely concentrated population that rivals no other where there is no quick way to counter the usual common ghettos diseases. But hey, the buffet is good.

Great cruise review and wonderful pictures. Thanks for posting them.

We have not been on this class of RCL ship and were surprised that there are no specialty restaurants. We've enjoyed both Chops, where that extra cost steak would come from, and Portofino on the larger ships. They are well worth the small additional charge.

As for illness on ships, common sense, lots of handwashing and using the provided sanitizers is always a good practice. It's true that having that many people living and eating so close together can lead to outbreaks of disease (Norwalk or Norovirus being the most common.) but we've been careful enough (and lucky enough) to avoid anything serious. We've spent 41 days at sea so far this year and are looking forward to at least as many more before the end of the year.

BTW, cruising CAN be a very reasonably priced vacation if you shop around a bit and can travel flexibly. Our threshold is $100.00 a day per person for a balcony. That includes cruise fare (all meals and entertainment) and port fees and taxes.

As you cruise more you get extra perks which for us on RCL now include complimentary wine and reduced price cocktails in a designated lounge each evening from 5:30 to 8:30PM.

Thanks so much Mark for taking the time to write this interesting, well written article.
I have been to Alaska three times, and I'm going again in early September. My experiences are similar to yours, thus I'm in agreement with almost everything you said. I prefer Princess, but I suppose all are good. Although it is a bit more of a hassle flying in and out from different ports, I love the glaciers and Anchorage for at least a day so I find it worth the extra effort to get up that far. Also try not to miss a tour of the interior. The animals in Denali are spectacular, is the place itself.

Thanks for the kind words Angelica. I'm glad you liked the article and photos. SBALAX: my wife and I just made the 'Platinum' level. The perks aren't as good as they used to be, but early boarding will be nice. My wife is the huge RCL fan. I prefer Celebrity. We want to do one of the RCL bigger/newer ships, and hopefully that'll be next. Marc...

Thank you for the very interesting review on your cruise in Alaska. Your details of the trip encourage me to continue hoping for a future cruise to Alaska. I planned on taking my family this year for a birthday cruise but lost my job and had to postpone my wishes. But, on the brighter side, my BF surprised me ith an Alaskan theme party and he purchased Alaskan crabs which were flown into Santa Barbara along with reindeer sausages and he made delicious Baked Alaska. He decorarated the party with balloon polar bears and whales. Sounded like you had a wonderful family event and appreciate all of your helpful hints.
