You can do your art work and go to school. Go to Art School, major in Art History, learn to be an art teacher......something else besides just working on your art. There are a lot of amazing artists out there that are starving artists and it's good to have a back up plan!!! p.s. no that money is not yours ~ it's money of your parents that they set aside for your college. Use it for college ~ you are blessed to have it!!

Speaking as one artist to another- being an artist isn't easy. It's hard work and it goes beyond just creating the work. It's a business like anything else. Please go to college and at least get a basic education. You can always work on your art while in school. Your parents are right- at least go to the City College.

I have worked with and hired many artists. I ALWAYS hire the ones who are not only good artists, but who took the time to become professional as well. They understand that most artists need to be commercial, and work with the client, that we hate 'I'm more creative than you' attitudes, that we know our products and our clients. Getting a college education is one way to expand your horizons and grow up. Anyone with too much self-esteem definitely could benefit from some maturity and humility. Maybe you could even take some classes in a subject you weren't so gifted in so that you could understand what hard work really is?

Sometimes I wonder if the questions in this column are made up by Edda as an attempt at humor.

Consider the wisdom attributed to Will Rodgers : "an artist is the only thing you can say you are and nobody can say you ain't".

As long as you fully pay your own way, you get to do whatever you want. It is that simple.

Check out the Display Installation program at SBCC SOMA. It lets you be artistic while being gainfully employed, with enough demand for your services that you can be a real artist in your spare time.

Come up to I Madonnari and look for the Edhat square. I can introduce to a few great commercial artists that are cool and easy to talk too. Or take the advice of the first three comments.

Sure, be an "artist". Whatever. Most of the sucessful ones make it after death however so unless if you have a way of coming back for all that dough, forget it.

You can make a good living as a commercial artist. Get a bachelor's degree in whatever you want, doesn't have to be art. You'll need that degree to get in the door most places. I learned that by age 25.

I think you have an under-developed sense of responsibility, not an over-inflated sense of self-esteem. Getting an A on a high-school diorama is not going to put food on your table after you blow through mommy and daddy's money. Tell them thank you for the money they saved and yes, you will do your best at college which is what they saved the money for. Otherwise, they should take that money and spend it on themselves. It was theirs that they choose to save for a specific purpose. You have now stated you don't want the money for that purpose so it reverts back to them to use how they see fit. Offer ->Counter offer-> Rejection of counter-offer. Contact fails. Consideration reverts to first party. You over-played your hand.

In the long run you might be doing your parents a favor by skipping college. On the other hand if you qualify for a scholarship college might be worth thinking about. Otherwise it's awful expensive these days and you're loosing a paycheck during the years spent in school. For people who want to get into high paying professions such as law or engineering college is worth it.
