Yeah, the last time I was able to drive in was right before it sold in early Dec. '06. Camped out at cojo with Hillary Hotchkiss and the crew. I was also lucky enough to get an bed in the guest house on a couple of my trips up there. Serious bummer when it was sold.

The photos are really wonderful. I hope the area doesn't become developed but is able to retain its grandeur for future generations.

I am so jealous. I'd love to have (had) the opportunity to visit that ranch and coastline.

wonderful photos! in the early 60s we'd launch my 14' outboard off gaviota pier and fish just outside the surf line at gov't point and catch nice halibut, troll for bonito on the way back. once the dog jumped out of the boat thinking she could walk on the kelp. she was a dalmatian, which explains that...not know for smarts

How can we save it from development? It is a jewel and an important part of the Chumash mythology. I regret the Gaviota Coast and Bixby did not become part of a National Seashore. Now we have to fight every battle to save beauty from greed and development.

As usual, you have shared with us your lovely photography and some important information about a stretch of our precious coastline that we may have to fight to preserve. Thanks, David, for sharing your experience and the beauty of the Bixby Ranch. Please follow up on the last comment. Did the deal fall through? I will keep my fingers crossed. Keep up the good work!

Those of us that have seen the Bixby Ranch are indeed very lucky. Thanks for the kind comments on the photos. I'm not sure what the steps are to preserve the property. I suspect that we'll be reading about possible development issues in the next few years. Comment 77169, the Bixby property went in and out of escrow a few times but did, in fact, close per my telephone conversation with the listing agent, Kerry Mormann. The buyer was Baupost Group, an East Coast investment firm. A great link that confirms the sale and outlines some of the history of the property is at: link

Oh David, I'm choked up at the thought of losing the Bixby ranch to development of any kind. It's so beautiful I'm weeping. Thank you for the pictorial!

Beautiful country. Let's hope someday access will be restored. A program like that camping pass lottery keeps the impact down and the mystique while still allowing people to enjoy an amazing part of the California coast.

It is indeed one of the most beautiful , unspoiled properties on the coast. (of California......maybe the west coast!) It did close escrow. I was lucky enough; (gosh!) 30 years ago to be a guest of the Hotchkis's (only one s at the end of this Hotchkis) to tour the ranch and spend the night. It is what California was. 100 plus years ago. GORGEOUS. It took my breath away!!! All we can do is support.......(it takes time and commitment) the movement to preserve this unbelievable stretch of coast. I was really amazed at the size of the shells on the beach there......and then I understood. No one comes there! It is an exquisite and amazing piece of land. Penelope

WHAT IS BAUPOST? The Baupost Group, L.L.C. (Baupost) is an investment adviser registered under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940. Baupost was established in 1982 to serve as the investment adviser for four families, who were close friends with at least one of the others for many years. The original purpose of Baupost was to provide stewardship of their families' assets for generations to come. During the early to mid 1980's, additional families known to one or more of the original families were added as clients. Baupost currently manages assets ($1.7 billion) for approximately 40 families encompassing 700 individual accounts, through three investment partnerships and a mutual fund as well as three institutional managed accounts. There is no intention to add additional clients although members of existing families may add new accounts. Investment Philosophy.Baupost follows a value investment philosophy with a bias toward the preservation of capital. This investment philosophy is implemented with one of the broadest and most flexible charters in the investment business. The firm is an experienced investor in a broad range of securities and asset classes, including domestic and foreign stocks and bonds; emerging market securities; distressed securities and trade claims; performing and non-performing bank loans; real estate-related debt and equity; privately negotiated investments; and other illiquid investments. Structure.Shortly after its founding, Baupost established four equity investment vehicles in partnership form. Baupost's clients are limited partner investors in the partnerships with The Baupost Group, L.L.C., the management company, serving as managing general partner. In 1990, the firm converted one of its partnerships to a mutual fund, which is closed to all but existing clients' smaller accounts. The firm's assets are held in three primary investment partnerships, the mutual fund and a municipal bond partnership. Beginning in 1993, Baupost established a series of investment entities, known collectively as “Baupost Realty Partners” ("BRP"), to pursue investment opportunities in the market for real estate loans, properties and partnerships. In 1994, Baupost formed Bermuda Value Partners ("BVP"), an offshore entity, to participate in investments otherwise unavailable to U.S. investors. The limited partners of BRP and BVP are Baupost's three main investment partnerships. PROFILES OF MANAGEMENT & INVESTMENT PROFESSIONALS Seth A. Klarman, President Seth is President and a Director of The Baupost Group, L.L.C. ("Baupost").
