Who was the lady that was always dressed in all white that would speak to the hitchhiking hippies back in the early 70's around the Moreton Bay fig tree? She was always there.

Outlaw Behavior at the CircleBarB Ranch A Wild West Cowboy party; that’s what my son Noah wanted for his 7th birthday party. He and his friend Emily, who share the same birthday, had wanted this since they were 4 years old! As 7 is the minimum age for trail riding at the ranch, we postponed this grand event for 3 years. Together with Noah’s birthday buddy, we finally arranged their trail ride, (& pony rides for the younger kids), at the CircleBarB Ranch for 20 kids and assorted parents. We provided the ranch with 3 week’s advance notice as well as my credit card number to guarantee our day. We then went about ordering and assembling all the necessary details and accoutrements for a cowboy birthday party. We were set. We sent the invitations out with the Ranch’s liability release to be completed and returned. Everything was moving along perfectly. The kids were totally excited. The day of the party, March 2, finally came. At 9:00 am, just 2 hours before our scheduled horseback riding time, we get a call from the CircleBarB ranch foreman. Our group had been CANCELLED! No notice. Just cancelled. Why you ask? Well, the answer we were told was “liability”. Liability? Isn’t that the nature of a horseback riding business? Isn’t that why one is required to sign a release of liability? There was no reasoning with Circle Bar B. There were no explanations, nor options offered. Trying to think creatively and salvage the cowboy party just 2 hours away, we asked if we could individually rent horses - not as a group. We were told that ALL horseback riding was cancelled for the day. No one could ride. We asked to speak with the owner. He was unavailable. We left our contact information and asked that he call. We attempted to call our guests to alert them of this last minute change of plans – no cowboy party, go to Refugio Beach instead. Since we couldn’t reach everyone, we went up to the ranch with our kids in full cowboy regalia. The kids all tumbled out of their respective family cars eager for the horseback riding adventure. One little boy was wearing jeans – the first time in over a year he had worn pants! We doggedly went up to the guesthouse and basically learned that the refusal to let our children enjoy their birthday party had something to do with a long standing battle between the CircleBarB and one of the children's mother who was invited to the party (and who didn't even attend!!). While this had nothing to do with us, our children's Wild West party ended up in the crossfires of a petty family feud. Unfortunately, rather than either of these parties alerting us to an escalating situation, the business establishment and this person selfishly and childishly dragged their personal issues into my family’s event usi... I have a Chicken Joke Bookout in the big world. It has hundreds of jabs, jibes, silly-nilly fowl observations about crossing roads and other barriers, obstacles, etc. Yet , not one single chicken was harmed in any way - in the creation of my book. All in good taste also! It also comments on other members of our big animal kingdom - including many other feathered friends out there, crossing the roads, streams, rivers of life. No harm to any creature; no ruffled feathers. Not even any mental Quack-ups. Yes, Virginia - You can have your Drake - and laugh at it too. I modestly titled my book, "The World's Greatest Book of Chicken Jokes - and Other Fowl Humor" - (it's in local public libraries, by the wayside ). AND I'm gonna' go donate some copies out to that Pet Store in Goleta. They seem like nice folksters, doin' professional work. And the world sure does need more "Lightenin' Up" - dontcha' think, Bo ?

THOUGHTS FOR CHIEF PHILOSOPHICAL OFFICERS.
The Latin root "spir" literally means "breath" or "to breathe life into."
The root shows up in many English words: INSPIRE, PERSPIRE, and SPIRIT. It also shows up in the words ASPIRE and ASPIRATION, this week's theme:
"Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead." Louisa May Alcott
"You aspire to do great things? Begin with little ones." Saint Augustine
"A noble man estimates himself by an idea which is higher than himself; and a mean man by one lower than himself. The one produces aspiration; the other ambition, which is the way in which a vulgar man aspires." Marcus Aurelius
"Our aspirations are our possibilities." Robert Browning
"A leader's role is to raise people's aspirations for what they can become and to release their energies so they will try to get there." David Gergen
"To understand the heart and mind of a person, look not at what he has already achieved, but at what he aspires to." Kahlil Gibran
"If a man constantly aspires, is he not elevated?" Henry David Thoreau
"The most absurd and reckless aspirations have sometimes led to extraordinary success." Marquis de Vauvenargues (Luc de Clapiers)

Have you ever evaluated Rudy's Restaurants? In my research the Carpinteria location and the Buelton location are pale imitations of the Montecito Street home base. Upper State near Ontare comes close. Are these franchises? I was told at the Buelton location last Saturday, that I was wrong to expect the same taste for the same menu items.

I am a former Ventura County resident, (used to write for the Star-Free Press) and Santa Barbara is my favorite place on earth, although now, sadly, I reside in Florida. Last August we went to the Sunday Art Show on the waterfront and my daughter and I bought some pottery, which I absolutely love. So much so, in fact, that my Marine son is now home fro five years of active duty, some of it in combat, and he has become fixated on one of the mugs I got there and I want to get him his own. Also, I would like more pieces from this artist and would have gotten more had we not been traveling; I was afraid they would break, and one did, in fact. I got her business card but have been unable to find it since. But, today I found her photo on your web site, as well as some of the pieces I would like to purchase, however, there is no identifying caption. The potter's mark on the bottom of the mugs I have say "BL". Could it be Barbara Loebman? Can you please give me her name and/or tell me how to locate her? It would mean so much, I love her work, and I could stop cringing every time my son has coffee! Thanks so much for any help that you can give me! The mugs I need are on her right, second shelf.

I don't know if this falls within edhat territory, but why do we have more than one publisher of local phone directories? I already have a copy of Verizon Yellow Pages, and today a copy of SB Community Phone Book was delivered to my doorstep. These publications are over 1,000 pages each. Surely a household only needs one version of a phone book - and I am left to wonder if one version is better than the other, but am certainly not going to do a page-by-page comparison. With people increasingly using online resources, I am baffled by these multiple directories. I can see they receive advertising dollars, but doesn't seem very "green" to me.

I've seen nothing in the local press about the big HOUSEFLY INFESTATION. I'm talking about flies indoors, not just a few, and even when your whole house is screened -- Are we in our house the only ones experiencing this unpleasant and unfamiliar phenomenon.? We do have an indoor cat, (which means exposed cat-food) but we have always had indoor cats, and never such a fly problem before this year. Actually there's at least one other person I know of so far who says this is the worst year he can remember here for indoor flies. But I'd really like to find out if this is a widespread problem -- also of course, would appreciate any recommendations for dealing with it.

4 named fires are burning near Tepesquet canyon above the Cuyama valley. The fires were all started by the lightening storm that occurred last night. The fires are inaccessible at this time so AIRTAC and handcrews are being called in. The fires are all around an acre or two and are in "slowburn" mode although two are in "heavy fuel".

This morning on my way to work, I was flipping thru AM stations and caught a brief moment of Dennis Miller's show where callers were voicing their opinions on Sarah Palin. One caller disparaged her inexperience, Mayor of a small town, etc. Dennis encouraged the apparent dem to continue spreading his opinion to everyone who will listen, inferring that this will ruffle small town feathers and likely encourage more voters to support her. He went on to say something to the effect of "I live in one of those population 4,000 small towns.....I don't even think we even have a mayor?" Last I checked, Dennis lives in Monetcito- is that the "small town" he's referring to? Dennis, meet Mayor Marty Bloom, Marty Bloom, Dennis Miller. Ironic in that he's defending a former small town female Mayor, while ignroing the existence of his own female Mayor.

Hello neighbors…. Whether you are near or far it looks like our country is headed for hard times. Not a bad time to plant a garden! A couple of years ago a neighborhood close to mine started a practice of sharing their garden harvest with neighbors every first Sunday of the month. I stumbled upon one of the first exchanges while walking my dog. Since that time seven or eight new exchanges have sprouted in surrounding neighborhoods… it’s a timely idea and one that should be shared. Check out the food exchanges here… http://web.mac.com/viejavalley/iWeb/Mesa%20Exchange/Welcome.html and to find out how to expand the food sharing idea into the larger idea of a foodshed (which would be helpful in times of community need)… http://www.owendell.com/images/Foodshed.pdf Help share this idea with every part of our country… send it to a friend who loves to garden. May your gardens be plentiful~

I have informed Carpinteria Sheriff's department, but it seems they "have not been made aware of any such activity". I sure hope my sources are incorrect and the suspicious individuals I have seen walking into the hotel grounds at night are figments of my imagination. I guess it is up to us as a community to watch out for our own safety. Please call the Sheriff's department if you see or hear anything suspicious. 805.684.4561

If interested, you can create your own sudoku page by selecting the text at http://www.strictlysudoku.com/for-your-website.php and pasting it into a text document, saving it as plain text, changing that files extension to .htm. This new .htm file should open with your web browser. (It sounds more complicated than it is.) Today I feel like a leaf falling from a tree. I have no idea what lies between here and the ground. I have spent my whole life making music in the wind, doing what leaves are supposed to do. Then today – with no warning whatsoever - I am suddenly floating, being pulled towards the earth. Freefall. I don’t think I’ve hit the ground yet. OK, so it was a horrible day in Santa Barbara. You could smell the fear mingling with the smoke in the air. Thousands displaced. Hundreds of homes lost. It’s too terrible to comprehend. Yet another stunning event to chip away at the steely emotional armor I have developed in order to survive. On my aimless walk around the streets of Santa Barbara this evening, I was trying to remember when things were “ normal”. That would definitely take me back to before the Iraq war. Before I realized global warming was killing all the poor polar bears. Before the end of credit as we know it and the historic election of a man with the improbable name of ‘Barak Hussein Obama”. Before our beautiful slice of paradise got hit with 3 devestating fires in the span of 15 months. Were things ever “normal?” I’ll defer to someone much older than I to answer that question. But it certainly seems to me that events are being fired on us like bullets from a gun. Maybe Kyle Van Tassel was right, I thought, in his own misdirected way. He got up there on that overpass to jolt us out of our mundane concerns about getting to work on time. To tell us that we are stumbling down a horrific path in Iraq, but yet somehow, chillingly, we fail to turn it around. Hopefully Obama will change that. And what of the opportunities that this economic, environmental, and local destruction presents? Is it our chance to remake our economy, our prosperity, our country, our city, now that it has been largely destroyed? Pardon me if I’m still reeling.

I am very upset that the Democrats and the Bush administration have loaned $17 billion of our money to the car companies. In my humble opinion, one of the big problems with our country is that there are TOO MANY CARS! (in 2006 there were 250 million registered passenger vehicles). We are addicted to cars and gas. And, the companies that supply our fix are bloated and corrupt. Car companies spend a ton of money creating TV commercials that reinforce stereotypes to make us want to buy more, bigger, newer, more luxurious vehicles even if we can't afford them or don't need them. Car companies also pay lobbyists a ton of money to influence our government to do things in their best interest - and not in the best interest of the people. The unions have lobbyists too who fight right along side the car companies against emission and fuel efficiency standards. And, just think of all the money we spend making roads safe and wide to accommodate all these cars! If people really want change, I see no better place to start than to free the country of the evil influence that cars and car companies have on us. But, people really don't want change, do they?

Is anyone else in the SB/Goleta area experiencing problems with their Cox analog TV cable reception right now? For the past couple days, we've been getting a snowy picture on channels 3 through 6; higher channels seem to be okay. The problem will go away for short periods of up to a few hours but then comes back. Calls into non-local, Cox tech support yield the usual no information/it's a problem on your end/we'll send out a service technician response. In my experience, the problem has never been on our end. It's always something Cox is doing, but it's like pulling teeth getting them to admit anything or even just give you a status on whether they are aware of and working on the problem.

An update: Cox came out and found a problem with water leaking into one of their boxes in our neighborhood (it wasn't our house!). Hopefully, that fixes the problem.

We recently heard about a casting call for a movie that needs a 3 legged dog, so we submitted Chopper’s photo. Please vote for him here: http://geofftalbot.wordpress.com/help-find-scrap/vote-here/ We don’t know much about the logistics of the movie, but we would at least like Chopper to be considered. Thanks! Any one have any information about the fighter jet(?) that landed (or tried to?) at SBA this afternoon? Circled around our building on campus once at high speed then slowed down and looked like it was coming in for a landing. It seemed to be coming in to high to make the runway but we couldn't see if it landed or not.

The Jesse James Hollywood trial is now half way over. The Defense started their portion of the trial today. I've been following the case pretty closely. I sure hope this prick doesn't get off while all his friends are serving life sentences. It seems pretty clear from the news reports that Mr Hollywood did not order Markowitz' death, nor did he ever hint at wanting him dead. That will probably be his main defense. Sure he orchestrated the kidnapping, but the murder? Doesn't look that way.

Rumor has it someone submitted a challenge to the ballot argument supporting the building heights initiative today. He/She is apparently contesting the numerous references to "high-rise" development that is referenced in the text. The argument being that technically, by definition, high-rise buildings are taller than anything that can currently be built with the existing height limit. I'm told papers have been served to those who authored the argument. It's a tough standard to meet legally. They have to provide clear evidence that the information is false and misleading. This will be interesting to follow.

I sent an email to Whole Foods regarding their CEO & his oped in the Wall Street Journal. I said I would ot patronize their Santa Barbara Store EVER knowing their CEO does not support our President!! I hope all who are interested do the same. I have heard there is call for a boycott & a call for their CEO to resign. Since this store is a countrywide chain I hope we can keep it out until they change their officer. However their response says that he does not reflect the company's overall policy only his personal opinion. My personal opinion is "don't shop there!"

Sandrose, Read the 1st Amendment. That's why we (you) are allowed to say whatever we believe without fear of incarceration. It is our right AND our duty as citizens of the United States, to speak out. Don't shop there. But for peet's sake - it's a grocery store chain - don't call for a nationwide boycott because the CEO exercises his right to speak his mind and says something you don't like.

I am now the only city council candidate willing to make the argument against Measure B. Measure B would seriously limit the capacity of city planners to provide workforce housing, student housing and special use buildings for our community. A senior planner at SBCC told me today that the idea of housing some of the twenty thousand students in on campus dormitories would not be possible if Measure B passes. The remaining vision for some housing for students that arrive without cars and remain carless was to put the housing above existing parking lots. City planners have, in the past, used a flexible height limit of sixty feet to convince developers to put some low income workforce housing in the project. Additionally, special use buildings such as theaters could not be built. The Lobero, Arlington and Center Stage are all above the forty foot limit. It would also prevent the city from building high density workforce housing where it would block no views such as the lot behind Kinkos/FedEx just below Figueroa...I see hundreds of carless downtown employees living there! The lots above it, the Great Granada Gas Guzzler Garage and the Library Garage are never both full and the GGGGG is usually mostly empty. If the ten million dollars squandered foolishly on it had been used for workforce housing for the carless, we would have plenty of parking and housing downtown. Respectfully submitted, Lane Anderson www.laneanderson.org

Any tips on Holiday Air travel? I haven't flown in years and although I've heard of the restrictions, I didn't have to deal with them until now. Anyone have any tips about making getting through security and getting to your destination smoothly? What to pack in a carry on... some of the things are easy -anything liquid goes in your Ziploc liquids bags...but what about semi solids like deodorant, what about vitamins, prescription meds, my ever present bottle of tylenol? What classifies as a carry-on or personal item? Evidently my ever present backpack isn't not a "personal item" but a carry-on and may be required to be checked (read $25-35 please). Oh and has anyone heard about the poor lady that wore the underwire bras through security and now has a lawsuit pending. What a ridiculous bunch of nonsense. Review of the Revels The Revels Through wonderful music, dancing and singing, the revelers brought us through the longest night of the year to the fresh morning of the New Year. There was some doubt though, as death made its appearance - threatening the New Year and threatening the security of the Kingdom. But the Fool saved the day for after all. Only the Fool can defeat Death for we need laughter to drive away our grief and hope to dispel our despair! Swords, Morris dancers, children and lots of audience participation made this a wonderful way to seek peace and hope in the New Year. As the King advises us we are to take heaven, take peace, and take joy. And may our New Year be filled with dancing to drive the dark away, may we feast and be with family and friends and may we all pray for peace. Dona Nobis Pachem.

Does anyone know what the skinny is on the burned out house on Patterson Avenue located approx. across from the Noel Christmas Tree farm? It's been burned out for years and it looks as though someone has been trying to put it back together piece meal. I'm surprised that the County doesn't do something about it. Does anyone have any info?

Trying again.... maybe I posted too late in the day and most didn't read it. I'm sure folks out there have opinions and suggestions (I hope, I hope). We are visiting Santa Barbara for the holidays and planning on meeting old friends for Sunday brunch. Does anyone have any suggestions of a good place to go, late morning on Sunday that either isn't horribly crowded or that would take reservations so we don't have to wait for an hour for a table? I've heard about Alphie's and Cafe Int'l so far through yelp.com - any opinions on those or anywhere else? Thanks!

If you are connected with a charitable community service organization, preferably in the Goleta area, that could use a donation of a case (30 rolls) of paper towels, please post information about how we can contact you. We had a little "mix-up" with Amazon's "repeat order" feature, and instead of cancelling our automatic shipment of a case of 30 rolls of paper towels every 6 months, we ended up with an extra case that we don't have any room to store.

Board Meeting at SBCC with agenda to hear proposed fees for Adult Ed Classes to begin with Spring 2010 term. Phase One lists fees for Arts, Crafts and Humanities, and almost every class will have fees ranging from $60-$150 for 7 weeks, and this is not the entire course schedule. Other courses will have fees added, too. Please attend this meeting at 4:00, Thursday, February 11, SBCC Administration Room A 218. Let the Board know that this effort to try to reduce the number of courses is a terrible slap to Santa Barbara citizens who rely on Adult Ed (now being called Continuing Ed to include City College courses) for enrichment, to create a new career and to stay fit, both mentally and physically. Again, 4:00, tomorrow, Thursday, Room A218, SBCC campus and have your voice heard. These meetings are open to the public.

What's up with the Timbers restaurant? Today's Newspress Crime Blotter reports an event there. 200-300 people with lots of alcohol while the kitchen was closed, a violation of its alcohol license. For five or six years I have seen only two or three cars in the parking lot each day except maybe once a month a large event such as this one. How do they stay in business?

Another scary driver on Sunday. Man driving blue van with handicap sticker, woman in passenger seat, nearly ran down young couple who were walking in Victoria St. public lot. When he saw them he aimed for them. Driver called the young man a nasty name and said to young woman when she told him he almost killed them, "Want me to try again?" He was very scary. Warning.... Traffic Construction Rant. May cause delays and frustration. 1. RANDOM ACTS OF RAISED CENTER DIVIDERS What's the DEAL with the randomly placed and dangerous little center dividers going in on Cabrillo near West Beach? And how can they put up signs 'bike lane closed' all of the sudden? Totally dangers on a busy biking street (I'm sure they figure the bike lane is across the street, but that's not used by people who are biking for actual transportation, just cruzin'). They should close one lane to allow for the bike lane to continue, sheesh. 2. HANDICAP CORNERS BUT NO SIDEWALKS? What's the DEAL with the handicap accessible concrete corners going in on Foothill at San Roque and Ontare Road? I realize this is Cal-Trans, but come-on. There are no sidewalks so the corners are going to nothing. Even the construction dudes said they are lame. Before the curbs went in, there were no curbs, therefore no handicap impediments (except for a the potholes). Is this what our federal Stimulus dollars are going towards? Ugghhh. 3. WHITE LINES For recommendations for good, safety improving and Cheap (compared to bulb outs and random raised center dividers), can we pleaseeee get pedestrian/bike lines (white) painted on San Roque Road? Since there are NO side walk (see above). There are many many folks who use both San Roque to walk up to and across Foothill road (since Ontare and Alamar are the only other close options... with a traffic light.) It will also help drivers understand where and where they cannot drive (eg: up against the curb is a no no... ). It would also be a good exercise in studying the width of this high traffic road. It seems that perhaps parking (an I know the residents will not like this at all) NOT be allowed. 4. CAN WE HAVE SOME LANES PLEASE? Above foothill on San Roque is a monstrously dangerous race track. Above foothill on San Roque Road there are ZERO traffic lines (no white lines, no center line) and no parking restrictions. As a result the road has become like the winter Olympics giant slalom; folks driving up and down sppeeeed and swerve around parked cars, taking outside corners wide and insid... [ more ]

Wow! Like the soap opera when I was younger. Way to go! If I was this writer, Nicole, I would be wondering if I wanted to belong in this town you people hold in such high regard. But, then again maybe her "so called BS & hypocrisy" touches that part of yourselves you don't like and pick apart in others instead of looking in the mirror as well. For Question and Answer: I have long monitored the USGS site for earthquake activity. During the past two months there have been a relatively large number of temblors at either end of our state. This coupled with the major rumblings around the "Ring of Fire" has me wondering - should be worried about a fairly large one striking here say, like the 1978 5.8 centered in Goleta?

Maybe texting while driving will turn out to have an upside. Bear with me a sec. The worry used to be cellphone use while driving, but that seems to have shifted to texting. But texting you do with the phone in your lap, and many of the drivers I see chatting away in sweet oblivion don't bother with speakerphone or earpiece but being right-handed they have it up to their right ear. At last the kicker: EMF from the phone might turn off their ability to act in a morally responsible manner according to a new study. I guess either way, the moral majority is endangered.

How sad.... Sometimes I sympathize for the homeless, but other times their actions cause me to not want to help. I donate lots of time and money to help the homeless and many of them do appreciate it, but others don't. Just a few minutes ago a homeless man staggered in front of our office door on State St blocking it and smoking a cigarette. I squeezed the door open and said "Excuse me sir would you mind not blocking the door and smoking in our entrance way please." His response was "If you stopped talking to me I would leave!" He started to walk away so my last words were "Have a good Day." He just walked off. I always felt I should approach homeless just like any other person. Yes, they are homeless but it doesn't mean they are animals and plus everyone likes being treating like they are human. But when I am kind and call you sir I would hope to be treated kindly. Some people are just bad apples and they are starting to spoil the bunch. I wish our lovely town didn't have such a bad homeless problem. Thank you EDHAT for letting me vent.

Santa Barbara County firefighters were clearing brush by Rocky Nook Park. Allegedly this was made possible by a grant from the federal stimulus package. If so one wonders why they did not use the money to hire workers who were without jobs. If they were using firefighters during regular working hours (a frugal thing to do but unlikely) they added nothing to the economy. If (much more likely) the firefighters were getting overtime to do this work we are all paying a huge cost. Anyone know anything about this?

Bulb outs - Can't we prevent any more of them? They stick out into the bike lane, they confuse drivers and result in accidents and result costly repairs to tires. The biggeest problem is they are unsafe for bicylists. Congrats DAS, Helene et al what a boondogle! Look at Cabrillo - now bicylists have to get into the right traffic lane to get past the bulbouts. Look at Garden and Islay - what a craziness.

For those watching broadcast TV, our digital PBS from KCET has doubled. Tuesday night digital channel 26 re-broadcasting the four LA channels from Gibraltar was off the air, presumably due to the wind, so I tried analog channel 28 that had been re-broadcasting just KCET on 28. Bingo! Four channels of digital. That is: KCET in HD, Orange (County), Vme (Spanish), and World. This is great news for many places in town where the weaker signal from Gibraltar didn't reach.

Shoreline Park : are leash regulations still in effect? This evening (Monday, 5:00 PM) I noticed a number of dogs off-leash, including three large German Shepherds accompanying three different men. Each of the shepherds roamed at least 50 yards away from their owners. (Interestingly, Pit owners seem more responsible.) If leash laws at Shoreline are no longer to be enforced, the city should make that fact clear and remove signs. People who walk small dogs could then choose to go elsewhere. Frankly, as a small dog owner, I think the city will have some culpability should an accident occur. In off-leash areas, owners are fore-warned. A wink and a nod is NOT good policy.

On Tuesday’s election ballot you will see the names of four candidates running for the office of Treasurer-Tax Collector-Public Administrator. This position is also Santa Barbara County’s Public Guardian and heads the Veterans’ Services Program. These parts of the job play a critical role in protecting our most vulnerable senior citizens and providing assistance to our veterans. One candidate, Polly Holcombe, has pulled out of the race and has endorsed Harry Hagen for the office. Another candidate provided no information for the sample ballot and has made little effort to explain his qualifications. This leaves two people effectively in the race. One of those two, if elected, will be learning how to handle the complexities of this difficult position while doing it. The other candidate, Harry Hagen, has been the the Assistant Treasurer-Tax Collector-Public Administrator for the past seven years. The Treasurer-Tax Collector-Public Administrator is a non-partisan position for which we need the most qualified person.

This opinion has two legs, one being the carbon foot-print we promote by accepting the sale of non-local goods and services that duplicate items or services that are already available in our area, and the second is the environmental disintegration we allow to continue by NOT speaking up about products that are sold in our area that are a) not recyclable products or b) are packaged in materials that are not recyclable in our area. 1. Accepting Non-Local Goods and Services that duplicate goods and services already manufactured or grown in our area. a. I am far from the idealistic sustainable person I would dream to be. I do try to get our vegetables at the local farmers market and typically try to buy organic. I also grow many fruits and vegetables at home and do not use herbicides or pesticides in doing so. With that said, there are occasions when I am in a pinch and will make an emergency run to the local Von’s supermarket. This brings me to the birth of this thought. I had to pick up some avocados. My tree is young and not yet producing. We live in the land of avocados right? Well, as I said, I was in a pinch and had to have some at this time. I noticed a huge display stack of avocados. I picked one up and noticed a “Produced in Mexico” sticker on the side. What is wrong with this picture? Santa Barbara and Goleta are MAJOR avocado producers. b. Are these not hard times? Do our local growers not have PRIORITY with these chains? Shouldn’t they? Is it the supermarket chain opting for a “good deal” from Mexico or is it the local growers who can get a better deal selling to some other distant communities? It is my opinion that supermarket chains should be “encouraged” to purchase their produce from local farms when possible. If they want to do business here, they should GIVE BACK to the community. c. This would also apply to other goods and services provided here, e.g., construction, item production, or services. 2... [ more ]

Do NOT Trust Graham Chevrolet!!!!!!! They over charged me for my car by $1,500 and told me the reason was that older cars are harder to get. My car is just a 1996 Saturn, not a 1969 Camaro or anything fancy. Erica Smith lied and said everything worked “Perfectly” when in reality I now have to get about $2,000 worth of work on preexisting issues. When I told Ben, the sales director, about Erica saying everything was "perfect" and that she even interrupted me while I asked more questions and his response was "Well that's Erica". How is that a valid response??!??! They say they inspect every car, but that is apparently not true since they said my car was perfect. • The car stalled on the freeway because the gas gauge is faulty and the general manager said that is something they don’t need to tell their customers. He even said he had sold a truck not to long ago where the gas gauge didn't work at all and said he didn't tell his customer of this issue!! Their response was “That is what you expect when you buy a used car.” Erica Smith was my sales agent and told me she could help with any issues and then when all this came up she said she couldn’t help and that I needed to talk to someone else on the sales floor. I've spoken with the director of sales and the general manager and both believe they are not responsible for Erica lying to me, and Dennis the general manager said this is what you should expect when buying a used car. Graham Chevrolet is the kind of company that give all car dealership businesses a bad name. They acted extremely unprofessional and took advantage of their customer!!!! Do NOT Trust Graham Chevrolet!!!!

I think it is great that the police have stepped up the enforcement of the graffiti artists, but I wish they could do something about these people driving thru residential areas with these loud booming car stereos...I love loud music also, but there is a time and place for it, not at 3 AM with the stereo so loud the windows rattle and kids cry. I think they just hit the power off button when they see a cop car so it is very hard to catch them...it is a ticket. Maybe if the police issue a news release that they are stepping up enforcement ? Not sure what to do about it, but it is very annoying. Any ideas people ?

Is anyone having trouble with the CHP lately? What’s going on with them? Here’s what happened to us yesterday. Below is my husband’s account. We were driving our 1995 Volvo 850 on the 101 one exit from our home in Santa Barbara. We were driving well within the speed limit in the middle lane at Las Positas with cars passing us all around. A CHP car began to follow us from about 15 car lengths. It then zoomed up ahead and cut us off in an extremely dangerous manner, crossing right in front of us from the left lane to the right lane and then to the shoulder. After a few seconds, it shot back on the road and came right up behind us, red lights flashing. Neither its top lights nor its siren were on and I was confused for a second. Then the officer started declaiming on the megaphone for me to pull off the highway, which I did immediately at upper State Street. I pulled into the 5 Points Shopping Center and got my license, registration and insurance out – all in good standing. Officer Taylor (I.D. 1953Y) approached and tersely asked for my information. While she was reviewing it, I asked her why she pulled me over. She said that I was “probably not wearing my seat belt.” When I showed her that I WAS wearing it, she said that I was not wearing it properly because the shoulder strap was too low. “You’ve gotta be kidding me!” I thought. “Officer, was I driving above the speed limit?” “No” “Was I driving erratically” “No.” “Then why were you following me and why did you pull me over?” No answer. “Ok, if you are thinking of giving me a ticket for what you claim is an improperly worn belt, I respectfully ask you to give me a warning, not a ticket. I had no idea.” ... [ more ]

Santa Monica spent a lot of money to close off streets for a "walking market" and it was a failed experiment. I remember going there then & it was a wasteland that shoppers were avoiding. Then the homeless moved in along with the taggers. The whole thing had to be redesigned & re-opened up. I know closing off downtown state sounds like a fun idea (and it is during Tuesday farmer's market) but doing it permanently would NOT be a good thing.

Santa Barbara will never look like an LA Slum. Now a nice little cozy white trashy town, that's more like it. A few more years like this the average price for a BFI outhouse on alittle pices of proptery on the East Side sould go for 60-70 thousand dollars.

However, recently I have been noticing that whenever I read comments for a post in the news feed, there is a lot of negativity! I want to live in a place where my neighbors are proud of each others' accomplishments, and don't complain everything, especially about things that they don't know enough about. Happiness is contagious, but so is the opposite! Can every hour be happy hour?? :)

RE: COMMENT 88918 I think they took them out so they can scrape off the top few layers of asphalt and then reset the manhole covers when they repave the street...but some of them are in the middle of the sidewalk making the sidewalk difficult to traverse...especially for elderly/disabled who frequent the area. I emailed the city project manager to see if they could be moved off the sidewalk when possible last week and I noticed the ones in front of Ralph's were moved into the new planter. (but I didn't get a direct response)...not sure about any of the other ones though.

So after reading the wind chime thread I have a question for Edhatters. I live in a complex the does not allow pets. One of the tenants is friends with the owner so they allowed them to have Parakeets. I love pets so I don't mind that they have them, but they leave them outside. They squawk all the time. It is 3 birds in a cage that is barley 2ft by 2ft and I think they make that much noise because they feel trapped. For hours sometimes they would not stop making noise. I don't mind listening to a bird sing, it is usually beautiful. But this seems more for a cry for help than anything and it starts as early at 6 in the morning. I guess after three years of living there it is finally getting to me. I would hate to say anything and have them lose their pets but I just feel like I can't take it anymore. What do you guys think I should do? Should I just bite my lip and deal with it or should I say something to the management company?

A curious thing has been occurring in, and around our neighborhood (Patterson/San Marcos north of 101) lately. I wonder if someone can explain...Seems someone is parking the same old junker cars and vans on the streets in this neighborhood and moving them (presumably overnight) before they've been here long enough to be towed. Neighbors have complained, but there's only so much the sheriff's can do. Some have speculated it's a used car salesman using the streets for storage, but it's hard to imagine most of these vehicles being worth anything. Any ideas?

I think our approach to Halloween in IV is all wrong. We should have checkpoints to enter IV, charge $5 to get in (to help pay the Police) and wristband everyone (color coded for under 21). Anyone inside found w/o a wristband should be fined. During the checkpoint, sobriety can be checked as well. This will help to defray the costs of the event, but even more , it will discourage the massive attendance. Perhaps even advertising these changes will discourage attendance.

Who are the voiceless victims of America's economic crisis? The family dogs and cats. When people lose their homes, so do their pets. If they are facing economic uncertainty, they don't adopt new pets. Who suffers? The dogs and cats who sit in cages waiting for a rescue that may not come. No blame attaches to people who can't afford pets. But some of us are still doing okay, with secure homes and incomes. Animal lovers who can, please consider adding a pet to your household! It helps those who can't help themselves, and you get the joy of a new dog or cat to love and be loved by! The county's three shelters will be holding a "Home for the Holidays" Adoption Fair on Sat. Dec. 4th, from 10-4, with discounted fees. Or just come by during business hours, and see if you can find space in your home and heart for a homeless pet!

There are lots of reasons to worry about our community, the news is not always good, but today I have to say thank you to a random stranger. My daughter lost her wallet this evening. She was downtown and somehow it went missing. She was still downtown when she realized it was lost, and spent a good amount of time backtracking in an attempt to find it. She didn’t find it. It is never fun losing your wallet and we were planning on spending the evening calling credit card companies and going through the drill. But we didn't have to do any of that. About 15 minutes after she got home, we received a call from the police. The wallet had been found and turned in. We picked it up at the station on Figueroa less than an hour after it was lost. Eric Maas, a shuttle driver, spotted the wallet and turned it in. Honestly, I can’t begin to think of a better testimony to our community than this. Thank you Eric.

Does anyone understand this? My daughter and hubbie were stopped at an intersection in Chico and were t-boned by a hit and run driver. The police were not able to find the runaway driver. Hence, the auto insurance says they have to pay their $500 collision deductible even tho they have uninsured motorist coverage, since they don't have a license plate number of the person that hit them! The damage to their car was over $8,000, but it doesn't make sense that if you are plowed into and the person drives on, you're supposed to have been able to catch their license plate number (and this was a bad wreck). It seems that uninsured motorist coverage should not have a deductible, and I'm thinking the insurance company is trying to get out of what they should pay. Anyone have info that would help?

We would like to replace our expensive Cox land line with a cheaper service that includes in-state long distance. We don't care about caller I.D., call waiting or voice mail. Any suggestions? We have cell phones, but would like to keep our land line as well.

Does anyone have a referral for babyproofing our house? I know it is "easy" to cover plugs etc...Rather I'm looking for a professional that can give ideas/options to babyproof fireplaces, glass furniture, entertainment centers, carbon monoxide detectors/placement. The fireplaces are really throwing me for a loop, short of putting gates around it, what else?

SMART METER UPDATE: I would like everyone to be aware that the California Public Utilities Commission has recently ruled that utility customers who do not yet have a Smart Meter can request to be put on a Delay List while further consideration of the Smart Meters is ongoing. However, you MUST CALL to be put on this list! A LOT of people are calling, so make sure that you call in if you do not want a Smart Meter installed on your home. The phone number for So Cal Edison's Delay List is (800) 810-2369. PG &E also has a number for their Delay List so if you are a PG&E customer, call them.

The phone number for PG&E's Delay List is 877-743-7378. So, PG&E customers who do not want a Smart Meter installed, should call that number to be put on the Delay List while the CPUC is deciding on the whole Smart Meter issue. Currently, if one already has had a Smart Meter installed, one cannot have it removed, but I suspect that that will change. Again, So Cal Edison customers should call (800) 810-2369 to be put on the Smart Meter Delay List. Someone told me that So Cal Edison is already sending reps out to physically tag those properties that have been listed on the Delay List so that the owner's wishes will be respected. Has anyone seen these reps yet? Apparently, the utility companies are getting a lot of calls!

Can anyone supply a lead for someone who does small appliance repairs? I have Sunbeam Mix-master that needs some work - motor doesn't start. I'd rather repair than replace, and I'm not finding any leads via google. Located in Santa Barbara or Goleta would be ideal. As far south as Camarillo is an option. Thanks much for any help.

It is rather disparaging that someone would spread rumors that "Maverick Window & Door" at 414 E Haley St is out of business. It seem these rumors are being address as not true when they pop-up. Yet then another nasty rumor is posted, which is damaging to this business. It would would behoove anyone who has questions or concerns to call the company directly at 805-730-1600, just I have done.

If you're not a student and you're in you're 30s, antisocial and bad speaking skills, what can you join or do in order to meet potential girlfriend, or seomthing here in SB? Seems everyone who goes to Dance schools or schools or events is already outgoing and talktaive and social so if you try to join, they'll think you're weird cause you're not the same as them as them. I went to the Carrillo recreation center one time and that's how it felt. I felt very bad and ignored. Is there any place for friendship/singles in SB/Goleta where people you're age(20s or 30s ) won't think you're weird and stupid and will accept you?

Just wondering How a nonstudent adult(30s) would be able to meet Foreign students for cultural exchange. UCSB now only has exchange programs conversation programs for current students( i asked) and SBCC has abandoned it's conversation partner program since long time ago. i'm interested in culture and language and i'm sure some of these students would like to meet americans. but there's seems to be no way. you can always see them and talk to them out there in the city but unlike american and hispanics who can become friends with people in public, asians etc don't have that kind of culture and they do not like to be talked to or approached by strangers. So anyway to meet them?

Who is in charge of cleaning up those areas alongside the Freeways? Need to know why the side of the freeway through downtonw has remained so filthy with litter. It seems to be the worst from (northbound) Bath Exit-all the way to Goleta. There is trash everywhere! Can anyone help this effort? This is Santa Barbara and instead of looking at the plantings-you see all the trash!

I"m from SB. Where do you go Meet Women for dating if you're not a student and you're not outgoing party /club type guy? I'm already in my 30s i have nothing. And people keep saying you can meet women at supermarkets or whatever. That's stupid. THat only works for playboys or stuff or good speakers. But that doesn't work for guys who are not good speakers and are shy or whatever. When you try( and i have tried talking to women in public) they just think i'm weird and stupid. Wish there was some place were women wouldn't be expecting all guys to be playboys or great speakers. Like some Friend club cafe where people would be accepting. For example i can go to clubs or whatver, i've even gone to dance classes but since I'm not like any of the typical guys, people just think i'm stupid and are not interested in me. I'm a guy with a disability and i dont' speak like the typical mature 30 year olds. So i really don't know how to ever meet anyone that accepts me.

I'm looking for a new primary physician, since I'm fairly new to the area. I am 65, have medicare and am in good health. I would like a good physical from someone who would be available for any future health issues. I have some preferences, so the more of these the better: prefer female, easy to interact with, experienced, and open to alternative or complimentary therapies (or at least not negative about them.) Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is about the Bus station and buses. Why in the Transit center they keep announcing the buses in SPanish if it's the same thing as in English. They think that Hispanics are not smart enough to learn the numbers? Plus english and spanish are very similar. And the hispanics could easily learn the ENglish. for example. Why do we have to have it repeated twice like this "Line 2 Eastside" "Linea 2 Eastside" That makes no sense. It's the same thing. Who came up with this idea that hispanics need to listen to the bus thin in Spanish. It's so simple to learn the basic numbers especially since Spanish and English are similar. The translations are not meant for Spaniard Tourists either. They are for hispanics that live here all their life and could easily learn the ENglish numbers.

I am still trying to get on the new time. I HATE changing the clocks twice a year and my body hates it even more. Can't we just start a movement to stay on regular OR daylight savings time? I never meet anyone who is happy with the changing and research shows it is actually harmful to our natural rhythm and causes illness and accidents. Anyone with me and how do we proceed?

Dearborn Condos - I am considering purchasing a condo in the Dearborn community and would be interested in feedback from those who have in the past or currently live there. The condo I'm interested in is 31 Dearborn Pl #28, which is literally next to the train tracks. Here is what I'm interested in learning: -Are the condos and community well maintained? I understand the roof, plumbing and electrical is old, do you know what the plans are for this? -How often do the trains pass (I have Amtrak info, wondering about freight) -Are the neighbors noisy in that part of the property -Any issues with vandalism/break-ins -What is the charge for the washer/dryers? Are vacant machines hard to come by in the evenings and on the weekends? Thank you! Please no derogatory comments or rantings.
