There are many handsome and bright young men who think this a formula for success, some go to Harvard and discover to become all they wish for is achieved from 95 % hard work and sweat to keep up with, and occasionally overtake, their equally and even more gifted peers. Others gamble and stay lazy, becoming brilliant in the world of learning how to survive while doing as little as possible. However this is tricky, when the going gets tough and without a background in serious work and study when young, this group can end up homeless, friendless and penny less. A small per cent may try their chances in the criminal world, eventually ending in the corridors of jail, instead of the halls of fame. "Frustrated Mommy" could ask her son for his opinion on the group in which he would like to see himself in the future, and does he think 30 years from now she will be proudly talking about his achievements,or turning pale, fidgeting, glancing sideways and changing the topic of conversation? Should be interesting.

Sadly, he probably WILL be able to get by on his good looks and charm. Companies I worked for tended to favor goodlooking men for promotion -- regardless of their skills or work ethic -- over their more talented and harder-working colleagues. (And let's not forget John Edwards or Gary Hart ... how far would either have them gotten in their careers had it not been for their good looks?)

71454P Yes,you may be right. Sadly we can all be taken in by charm and good looks. One has only to read about our politicians to realise this! In business I hear that tall men have an advantage over short ones, and brunette women are taken more seriously than blondes! One wonders where Edwards is going now? A failed and inconsiderate spouse and father, a confirmed liar, willing to let his best friends take the fall for him and a coward in front of his mistress. Worst of all, when his infant daughter one day learns the truth about this her father she will not be thrilled. Gary Hart seems to have vanished into thin air.

"Bright" is a relative term, and "handsome" at 14 will not necessarily transate into equal attractiveness at 18, or 21, or 35, 40 ... you get the picture. Hope this boy has role models to show him how integrity, kindness, and diligence endure to ensure success.

Edfan: How true. One can never tell with children and in a family no two children are exactly alike. At 14 our son was blessed with braces and a good crop of acne that progressed until he was 17. He was "bright", an early high school graduate but socially immature. We thought he was not ready for college and packed him off to family in Europe for an extended visit. Within a year he grew up. He saw everything he could, a lot on his own, taking the Euro rail everywhere and staying in youth hostels. He came home and went back to school immediately! The pimples had vanished, he had filled out and he was drop dead gorgeous. He is now 42 with his own consulting business and a great family.

The cure for lazy is an enlistment in the military.
