Gosh, I hate to say this, but there seems to be more crime in my long adopted home of Santa Barbara than in my newly adopted home here on the beach near Ensenada. I know the media picks up on the really bad cartel stuff that goes on down south of the border, but it is not random as all these crimes and stabbngs in our fair city.

Re 69653: Please, let's leave race out of any truly concerned conversation about violence and despair in our city or anywhere - socioeconomic condition, absolutely. Race, not so much. Poverty and the subsequent decline into antisocial behavior have nothing to do with the color of one's skin.

COMMENT 69675 helpful negative off topic

Racial profiling is legitimate. It can save your life. That does not mean you are racist. It simply means you are using your brain and memory to keep you out of future trouble. All races cause crimes, we all know that, so what is your point EDFAN?

COMMENT 69676 helpful negative off topic

@69653. ya, it was the human race

COMMENT 69678P helpful negative off topic

2010-04-15 08:12 PM

Edfan the gentle racism of saying its understandable due to economic reasons disregards the fact that the overwhelming number of people in poverty are not criminals. How very enlightened of you though, just as enlightened as those who would make a issue of someones race to fit their stereotype of a race or economic class's behavior.

I think the description of the subject as Roger gave was appropriate in giving age, race, physical description, and vehicle type as it gave a least a basic sense of who the authorities are seeking.

@69660 - I don't know how big the area is where you're living --- but I offer that you don't have an edhat - and a Roger doing the reports. Prior to Roger's reports most of us had no idea as to the amount of crime going on; prior to edhat, almost none of us had an idea about the amount of crime. Now these reports are featured -- and we all know -- and it's the most looked-at reports on edhat. I don't think it means that there's more crime than there was, just that we know more.

COMMENT 69665 helpful negative off topic

2010-04-15 09:43 PM

just found this from an Edhat post on 4/12/10. I thought Roger had posted it but I was mistaken. Here's the post.. coincidental that tonight's stabbing was at Hendry's? 4/12/10 post
It all started at Hendry's beach, I was there. One man was walking from the parking lot toward the beach trying to blend in with a group, forked away from the group of people and then approached another man. An altercation started and one guy pulled out a gun waving it around and pointing it at the other guy. This was happening right between the restaurant and the slough in the dirt area in the middle of the day and NOBODY except for three of us even noticed. The guy with the gun took off to his car in the parking lot and one of the guys I was with got his license plate number, description of the guy/car and called the police. Needless to say he didn't get very far (He must have got caught right around Las Positas and Modoc). The guy that called the cops ID'd him and I assume he ended up in Jail with some major felonies. I can't believe Roger Dodger didn't hear this one on his scanner or I didn't see it on the news.

69717,I do remember seeing the report of that incidence, And I also did not see it on the news or internet local news. Although I am in Baja, I keep Santa Barbara as my "local" news. I am so grateful to my friend who introduced me to edhat last October, and I feel much more closely abreast of the happenings through this regular reporting.

and 69704P , Ensenada is a very large city, one of the largest international ports on the Pacific, perhaps 350,000 pop, or more and I live about 7 miles north, like a suburb, from the harbor, on a beach. Kind of like the distance from our harbor to Noleta.

If we had a super site like this here I probably would not understand it anyway as it would be in Spanish.

But, the Mexican grapevine works very fast, and my husband, who is fluent in the language, hears things before it hits the papers. the helicopters and sirens and armed police and army are in sight as soon as there is trouble. Like Santa Barbara, we have only one highway and ALL cars are stopped and searched when there is a getaway. this takes place from Ensenada to Tijuana.

By now, this should havebeen breaking news on KEYT-TV, but nothing. Only Roger and edhat is on the ball and the commenters .

Sheriff's Department spokesman Drew Sugars reports that despite life-saving efforts immediate after a stabbing that took place at Hendry's Beach around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the victim died from his injuries.

The case is being treated as a homicide. Immediately after the attack, 200 to 300 people surrounded the victim.

Officials are seeking help identifying the suspect in the attack. The Sherriff's Department's anonymous tipline number is 681-4171.

I was listening to the scanner during the stabbing at Henry's Beach.'

It was a bit strange because the police were scattered around looking for the suspect, then repeatedly said during the search "He's on the grass. On the grass behind the restaurant" Then a few moments later a reported "Code 4" which often means all clear/suspect in custody, etc.
Perhaps there was another individual in a conflict at the time?

Also heard that the suspect had fled with 2 females and was "hispanic, shaved head with tatts"

Heard some of the helicopter traffic, and it didn't sound like they were searching much for the guy, other than reporting on some white cars seen on cliff drive. So I had assumed the whole time that they had already caught the suspect - given the "Code 4" and minimal radio traffic on the helicopter.

2010-04-17 08:39 AM

Listening to the scanner when something is happening gets really confusing. There are so many different stories from witnesses and you know some people might be ui of one thing or another. I was alittle shocked they were not caught rightaway but now I think it's only a matter of time. The police know who they are looking for now. One of the accomplices should crack anytime if they want to have part of their life to live free. Not all of the occupants of the car killed Robert. There was an incident earlier near La Cumbre their recluctence to talk about that leads me to think of different things. But they know. the police here are pretty smart, it's only a matter of time before someone is picked up. As far as being afraid. I think it would be smart to pick up some mace, or a stun gun if you are afraid. Lock your doors and windows at night. We live in hard times and people are broke it's better to be safe than sorry.

Roger just a guess but the reason it wouldn't be called first homicide of the year is because its exact location is the county. I don't think its the 1st for the county, but the city in no way wants a murder on their books...

However they phrase it, its our community though.
