I so miss working at county general in the 60's! Does anyone have photos from that time, or memories of working in the hospital?

Are their any current photos just prior to the hospital closing available? I have been searching for a very very long time in regards to what happened to this hospital. I recall my Aunt went there but I was too young to remember why. I know she had a baby and she was the only Aunt that I had that was poverty stricken and maybe that is why she went to this hospital? Does anyone know if they had babies actually born and registered as being born at General Hospital?

I love reading Neal Graffy's narrative (often highly amusing) and seeing his historic photos. Please continue, Neal.

We are always happy to feature this type of content anytime. Just email scans of old photos to ed@edhat.com and we'll do the rest. It's good to have some written context about what the photo shows, too. Thanks.

Please set up a new section where people can submit there own "around the town" photos. Old bars that closed, freeway crossing, ledbetter beach, family photos etc etc.. I am sure that residents in Sb have boxes of old family albums they would love to scan to the computer if there was such a movement. i would love to see Picadily Square or old people around town... photos from the 90s, 80s, 70s etc!!!

In 1963, dad died of cancer there & was the last time I was there. At that time, cancer technology was so primitive that today, he would of lived longer. Can't remember it closing but as a young girl I remember it also being used for polio patients.

Over the years, I've wondered why something so desperately needed like General Hospital was closed. I remember going there as a small child in the late 40s with my father, a doctor in SB. I'd wait in their big (or so it seemed to me then) lobby watching the fascinating collection of people or reading my books while he and many other physicians from Cottage and St. Francis donated their time at the hospital. How much we need that today instead of overwhelming our local clinics and the ER.

...and I suspect there aren't and never were many hospitals where you could go from the graveyard to a place to recover... Sorry, couldn't resist. I wish I'd drive up there when I lived in SB from 1948 to 1968 even just "around the corner" off San Marcos Pass Road and probably less than half a mile as the crow flies. I do remember it as a big white structure though.

Our changing times. . . lots of bureaucracy out there now, and no hospital for po'folks. I had my tonsils removed for free there in 1940, I think it was.

I don't think the building is there anymore. I remember visiting sick friends at the old general hospital. Picture an old black & white movie of a hospital complete with echoing halls. That's what it seemed like to me.
