We follow Martha Stewart's method for artichokes. Before steaming, cut the top third off, trim the sharp points from the remaining leaves, cut the stem flush with the bottom of the choke, then spread the leaves at the top and clean out the center all the way to the heart. Under the steamer we put garlic, herbs, and peppercorns in the water. Then steam them with the open side down until a knife easily pierces the base. The flavor is excellent and there's much less work at the dinner table.

I prepare artichokes the same way as 61468, with the addition of lemon slices and a couple of tablespoons of olive oil added to the pot before steaming...mmm!

When I used to work nights and came home too tired to cook, I'd occasionally pop an artichoke in the microwave. I'd trim the stem, hold the choke with the leaves held open under the faucet to let water in, then wrap it tightly with Saran Wrap or something similar. Nuked it for about 4 minutes.

Thanks for thinking of us all - in such a delicious way - in anticipation of your birthday Leah. Hope your birthday was especially happy today in Cambria!

My mom made these int he 50's and htey were called Pixie Cookies. I think they were a Betty Crocker recipe, but not sure. Hers had walnuts. They flatten as they bake into 3" round, 1/2" tall cookies with fissures in the sugar coating to make them appear cracked or "crinkled".

I've seen a similar cookie sold as Earthquake Cookies, maybe at Pierre Lafond's in Montecito...?

Hopefully your birthday meal at Robin's in Cambria was everything you had hoped for. It is one of my all time favorite restaurants too! I'd love to get a follow up on what you ordered. I usually get the salmon bisque and the Korean black bbq glazed flat iron steak. Yum! I'm making myself drool just thinking about it.
