Seems the only businesses making it in this town revolve around drugs (legal and not legal) and alcohol. Well...caffeine has a grand following as well.

Whoever did the marketing study for BevMo should be fired. This is a terrible location for this type of store. If we want "national brand" wines at no-so-good prices, there are already plenty of stores in town that are happy to oblige. Many of us happen to like local SB wines, which are also readily available in the vicinity.

Comment 58677, you couldn't be more correct. SRL sells porn mags, which BevMo won't so why hasn't she complained about SRL for all these years. People just need to go away and let the adults handle things. P.S. - I'm happy as hell that SRL sells nasty porn mags. I've never bought them (not my thing) but not everything in this town needs to be sanitized beyond comprehension.

That alley sure is an interesting stretch. It is like a non-owned zone, everybody thinks it is somebody's else's responsibility to maintain it. It is a lost space, full of syringes, used snakeskins, broken glass.

I have to say that I think BevMo moving in right next door to SRL is a pretty sleazy move. I shop at BevMo up in San Luis Obispo every once in a while and its nice because they have some hard to find brands BUT their prices are almost always more expensive. On top of that they don't really carry local brands which I dislike a lot. The only reason I would like to have a BevMo here is because I've yet to find a liquor store in SB/Goleta that carries Jewel of Russia Ultra. I'd much rather purchase it from a local store than a chain though.

There is plenty of parking at the old thomasville parking lot. It's a liquor store, not Trader Joes. Big difference. I live in San Roque and the only parking problem that I have is when I want to go to Trader Joes. I have no parking issues if I don't want to go there. Same as Bevmo, if the parking situation is bad, then I'll go somewhere else. San Roque liquor has about 5 spots. San Roque Liquor is great! Don't get me wrong. This is a capitalistic society that we live in and a little competition might be good. I bet Bevmo doesn't cash checks or have someone like Sam working all the time.

Let's be realistic. 35 parking spaces will certainly not be enough for a Bevmo store. Those of us who live in the neighborhood already know too well the problems resulting from the inadequate parking at Trader Joe's, not to mention the problems at the State/De La Vina intersection that are yet to be resolved. Adding the large number of customers who will be attracted to Bevmo will only increase the strain on parking space in that area.

It seems that there are always complainers. Last night on KEYT, some woman complained that having a BevMo there where kids walk to school is bad. How ridiculous, since there is already a liquor store there and Trader Joe's, with no effect. The furniture store was a market previously and had no ill effect on traffic. Is it that all SB people want to keep out chain stores ? If so then just say that instead of these stupid other reasons which are off the wall. I would rather have a busy occupied store with more traffic than an empty store gathering dust. It means more active local economy. Let's get with the solutions rather than obstacles to progress!

I grew up going to that store in the 70's when the Parkers owned it and it was called Tally Ho. Then Sunil M bought and ran it for many years. While I don't live in SB anymore, have to live in almost as beautiful Tahoe, I do go in when I am in SB.Sam shouldn't worry, while initially there may be a drop off in sales,Everyone will eventually head back to SRL.My experience is that they are friendly and helpful, and have a very good selection.SB is a unique town that wants to have what bigger towns have, but generally can't sustain it.I give BevMo 3 years tops.

Some of you folks are way off base about the parking. The store will have 35 parking spaces. That should be fine. Secondly, those of you that are clamoring for the city to do more or require more parking are misinformed about the city's intentions pertaining to parking. As I said in a previous thread on the topic of BevMo: The City has decided to intentionally require LESS PARKING in an attempt to forcibly social engineer us to walk, bike, take the bus or carpool to these places. While this works great in dense, vertically-developed large cities with adequate public transit options, it does not and will not work in places like SB where we are not developed in this manner. Don't believe me? Ask the city's "Mobility Coordinator". Yes, that high-paid position actually exists. Expect much worse planning like this now that Helene Schneider is our mayor. You elected her. Now live with the consequences!

It will be very interesting.. the lot @ Thomasville can only be entered if you are heading up State Street...traffic flow will be difficult. We are directly affected.. We drive down the alley every single day..to get to our home and have for 10+ years. The alley is barely wide enough for 2 vehicles to pass each other. Delivery trucks are hard enough to navigate around at SRL, Giovanni's, The Pet Store, Indian Restaurant. We will now have more box trucks making deliveries, blocking the alley for 20-30 minutes at a time. I am not opposed to having a BevMo in Santa Barbara/Goleta, I just think there is better space elsewhere.

The residents of San Roque can stop this from happening. Call you City council members and your new mayor and go to the City Council meeting to present your case about the traffic problem this will create. Good luck!

I don't get the fuss about San Roque Liquors. I was in their looking for some specialty microbrews from Stone Brewing down in San Diego. The selection wasn't that great, prices were not marked, and the dude wasn't that helpful. When I went up to the register they rang up higher than I expected to pay, and believe me I know the going rate of good beer. At least BevMo will have prices listed for all to see.

Bevmo is not a 'liquor' store in the traditional sense. As some have pointed out it is a great place for party planniing, learning about new wines and they have these incredible sales where some wiine purchases can be for $.01 with the purchase of a certain amount. I like SRL - good folks--but how about they stop selling those single serve bottle of liquor.

Re: COMMENT 58632 Comment 58618 Spot on observation! Almost every business from the Verizon Wireless/El Pollo Loco to the 101 is way lean when it comes to parking spots. The City knows they are inadequate, but needs businesses there, hence the blind eye approval. BevNo will at least create spots in that postage stamp sized "parking lot." Competition is good for everybody. Makes you keep up and not take things for granted like many businesses seem to do Even SRL will have to step it up a bit if they don't want to lose up to 20 regular customers. Keeps everybody on their toes. Not a bad thing these days

It's 2010 folks! The economy is still in the tank and if somebody wishes to come in a set up a business after going through the City's red tape, we gotta let 'em. The customers will vote with their wallets as the whether or not BevMo stays or takes a hike. If it does fail, then WeedMo can have a shot, er, puff at it.

BevMos usually have quite a good selection of craft beers; I'd say darn near the equal of SRL. Prices will be comparable, too. That said, I'll probably stick with SRL for exotic beer and TJ's for liquor. It's been said before, but the BevMo's parking will be a nightmare -- think TJ's with a quarter of the spaces -- and it just won't be worth trying to squeeze in there.

I don't think this will be a big competitor for SRL. I go there for my craft beer selection and BevMo won't really have a great selection. They are more known for party supplies. Cases of wine and foods for parties. Having Trader Joes and Whole Foods has not caused me to shop at SRL less. Sam is the man.

Quite frankly, I can't imagine BevMo's selection being as extensive or unique as SRL's. I've only been in one BevMo, so my experience is admittedly limited, but I didn't really get the big deal. Maybe if you're having a big party? But the prices were pretty much the same as most other places, if not more in some cases. They had some water bottles for more than TJ's sells them for. Ehn, I'll keep going to SRL.
