I had a similar situation in Venice Italy many years ago; the outcome was not as good as yours, though. The experience made me become a more "aware" traveler, at all times. Kinda sad, though, because you want to be trusting.

The trains and subways in Portugal are known for being pickpocket/thief heavens.

A client of mine woke on a Spanish train to find she was the only one of her family members to retain ANY of their belongings. A canister of some kind of gas had been slipped under the door of their compartment and everything of value taken EXCEPT her passport which was under her pyjamas around her waist. It was only because they had that document that they were able to begin reconstructing travel documents with a consulate in a timely manner and then come home.
