Readers should not be discouraged from visiting Lisbon by John's report. There is lots to see there - above all the Museum of Fado, as well as many historical sites and museums devoted to art and history. Not far outside the city, Belem and Sintra are not to be missed. And I ate cheaply there last summer. You can buy a three day pass that enables you to use any and public transportation, and it gives you reduced admission prices. Just wear comfortable shoes to negotiate the mosaic pavements and steep hills.
