nice photos & commentary! thanks for sharing. for future reference it's spelled "Devereux," & the birds you called "turns" are terns. otherwise no complaints here. :-)

From the looks of these photographs, it seems one good tern deserves another.

Glad to see you added your pics as well, Callie. Your video of the terns is also good.

I'd love to go for a walk there today. Since I haven't been there in years, I'm not sure where I can park these day. Any suggestions?

There is parking at the two legal pullouts alongside the slough, before the dirt entrance to COP/Sands, but one cannot leave a car unattended. One can also park along El Colegio Road before the intersection with Slough Road, and walk. Walking all the way around the Slough via Sands beach is fun, because birds on all "sides" of the slough can be seen.

I probably shouldn't say this publicly, but there is one fairly close by place you can park legally. Turn off of Storke/El Colegio onto Slough Rd; after about 100 yards turn left (after the yellow "School Crossing" sign) onto West Campus Point Lane. (Do NOT continue down the curvy road to the slough--if you miss this turn, use the first left at the bottom to loop back.) Go past the UC Children's Center and when the road forks (left around the Center; right down to the slough and Faculty Housing) go slightly left/straight ahead into a dirt area at the white fence of the stables & park there. Or go full left and then bear right near that wonderful polo barn and you can park there (on dirt). Don't use the marked spaces of the Children's Center, they do ticket (after 5:30pm and on weekends that's ok, though).
