Mary loved her Dandies! I've heard that Caitlin will be going back to her breeder (also a co-owner) in Ohio... In the meantime, she was being fostered by someone here. Cheers to the SB community for looking out for this little dog! I called around the day of the fire to be sure Caitlin didn't have the extra trauma of being in Animal Control overnight, but it was President's Day so getting in touch with people was difficult. The Fire Department was very, very caring in answering my questions, and the folks at Cold Noses, Warm Hearts knew that Caitlin was being cared for.

Does someone have a photo of Mary? I know many dog owners, but not all of them by name.

Mary was a very good friend and client, we would meet every morning at Shorline park at 6am to walk our dogs. She hadn't been there for a while, so today I went to her house and found the sad truth..YELLOW FIRE TAPE around her house..MY WIFE AND I WILL MISS HER.. ERIC ZAHM AND STACEY GELDIN

Mary was a long-time supporter of dogs, obedience and the show ring. She volunteered to help at just about every event. She also loved to talk about her students and math and computers. From what I understand, her name hasn't been released to the media because they have yet to find her next of kin. A strong, independent woman, she never came across as lonely or alone.

Here is a picture I found on the Internet. The caption is "Mary Ostrand and her Dandie Dinmont Terrier champion".

Mary was President of Channel City Kennel Club when she passed away so tragically. She was a wonderful woman. Caitlin, an AKC Champion, was taken by the Fire Dept. to CARE hospital, and she is now being fostered by a friend. Animal Control was very helpful in arranging for the foster situation the same day as the fire, and, hopefully, Caitlin will go to her co-owner soon.

Ms. Ostrand was a substitute teacher while I attended high school. She was always willing to help out, even on Calculus tests! We'd always ask her a question during the test, and in doing so she'd give us a hint, or sometimes accidently the answer. Best Calculus substitute ever.

Caitlin is very safe and comfortable and Mary's final arrangements are in kind and extremely capable hands. Once the legalities are handled, we all will have a chance to celebrate her life and gather to share our memories of her. It is important that we let the pros do their job and not disrupt the work ahead. Blessings to all of you who loved her, she is watching over us and our pets.....

Mary was a delightful, funny, shy, gregarious, jolly soul that I had the pleasure of knowing through the Santa Barbara Mac User's Group. She was generous, self effacing, magical and very hard not to like. She had a HUGE heart and was just a lovely person. I did not see her often, but will miss her still. :-( My sincerest condolences to all who loved her. Mick Guinn

I am so sad. I have also showed dogs for a long time and although I am not from Santa Barbara I have worked with her at dog shows and talked with her often. She was a very nice person who truly loved her dogs and cared about all dogs!

Such a tragedy. I always knew her as a substitute teacher in the Carpinteria School district. She substituted back when I was a student sooo many years ago. She always had a positive attitude and was always willing to help out.

We were lucky enough to know Mary for almost 20 years, a loyal customer, a wonderful math tutor- she loved having pizza with us on Tuesdays after tutoring- Mary loved her dogs- loved math, bridge- such a tragedy, a quiet gentle spirit. Mary had so much to share with anyone who came in contact with her.

I just had lunch at Max's with Mary at the beginning of the month. She was so excited to show me the pendant with a miniature painting of Caitlin on it. Mary loved everything Caitlin, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, the students she tutored, her Mac, Colin Firth and encouraging people. She was a wonderful soul. I;ll miss you, Mary. You're the top!

To all of Mary's friends, I am the breeder of her dogs (she owned 3 of my little critters over the years) and we are trying to get Caitlin back to where she began. It is so amazing to read all of your wonderful tributes to Mary...I knew her for 30 years and the love she estowed on her dogs should be an inspiration to dog lovers everywhere.

How sad! I'm just shocked to read this. Mary was a temporary sub for my math teacher in 1988 when he was our for a few months with an injury. I remember her talking about her Dandie Dinmont Terriers. I'd never heard of them before, and I always associated the breed with her from then on. Poor thing...what a sad story.
