#1 place to live if you do not work & have no money, and have no intentions to be productive.

Actually #37 on this list, below paradises such as Reno, Tampa, Miami Beach, Anaheim, Torrance, Burbank and Irvine. Palo Alto is #1, which seems to be a close parallel city to Santa Barbara, but minus the ocean views and beach, and encapsulated in a large metro area. I want a re-count!

They clearly didn't read any edhat posts, if livability includes nice neighbors!

Some days I think all of edhat wakes up on the wrong side of the bed. Jeez.

It seems like lots of CA cities are on that list, even ones that have higher crime rates. Not so sure how prestigious being on that list is...

I would have to say, the Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Atherton, Woodside area IS the best place to live in the country. Clean, safe, no parking in neighborhood streets....love it there.

How can anyone take seriously a list of 100 "best places to live" that includes such garden spots as Torrance; Fargo, ND; Santa Clarita; Lincoln, NE; and Plano, Texas? Good grief!

Torrance runs up the Palos Verdes coastline, and is indeed, a beautiful area. It's called the Riviera of Torrance for a reason- Great beaches, great community pride, and a nice area to raise a family in the South Bay...

I've seen downtown Torrance and immediate residential areas. That;s enough for me.

Keep us far from the top, it can be our little secret...

Okay, I can understand some of these cities ranking above Santa Barbara, but Alhambra? Seriously? Also, Santa Barbara lacks in higher-paying jobs, the salaries are much lower than the national average. Not talking about minimum wage jobs, but professional executive level jobs. Coupled with outrageous housing and rental prices, it may be a beautiful place to live but it's not the most feasible.

I guess being dependant on tourist knocked us down a few notches. Perhaps another 100 boats might get us noticed!

That list is hogwash. Everyone wants to live here but can't afford the cost of housing and not enough good job opportunities.

Obviously they didn't take gang violence into consideration!
That should have dropped SB way down on the list.

LOVE THE IDEA of NO PARKING on resident STREETS, that really does keep out the RIFF RAFF. We're so tired of people parking in front of our house for their drug deals, do drugs, change clothes, change diapers, change cars, talk on the phone, smoke whatever crap that stinks up our house, eat their lunches and drop the trash on the lawn. Hit & run on our cars drive park up few spaces acting like nothing happened. Motorhomes larger than our home parking with generator running and loud people inside partying. Neighbors & strangers Fighting with whomever! Loud peoples with 20 car doors slammed on a 4door or VANS, party after party around the corner, screaming in the streets all hrs. sheesh! Can't our beautiful Santa Barbara be more like Palo Alto peaceful and blissful, so we have that kind of respect here in our so-called nice town too? Something really is missing here peeps.

Top place to live for who? Campers? Aspiring vagrants sleeping in Volkswagen busses? Released sex-offenders? Mentally ill folk who should be in treatment centers? Homless folk breaking their probation that spit on me because I ignore them and won't give them my money which they think they are entitled to? Uneducated immigrants that beat the system and are allow low-income housing by the city? People who have no choice but to work two $8.00 an hour jobs? People who are qualified for better jobs but can't get an interview because they don't have a Bachelor's degree? Even the high rents can't keep these elements out. $1460.00 a month for a one bedroom with no washer and dryer, no parking and I have to constantly move my car for either the street sweeper, or because there are school parking restrictions. In a little under 5 years my husband will qualify for his retirement and we can get out of Dodge, until then I will be checking the days off on my calender.
