Details are sketchy at this point but it appears that the little girl's mother was able to get her out the van in the early stages of the fire. The van was unoccupied when firefighters arrived. The mother came out of an adjacent house carrying her injured little girl after firefighters started fighting the fire. My thoughts are with the poor little girl.

What I find verying interesting is that there is no mention of the driver, parents, or anyone else being in or near that vehicle. I mean, WTH?

Poor child. Mother must be distraught. Story from Noozhawk; has pics: http://www.noozhawk.com/article/young_child_reported_burned_in_santa_barbara_vehicle_fire/ "A 4-year-old girl suffered second- and third-degree burns to her face, Harwood said, and she was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Additional details on this incident were not immediately available."

Noozhawk now saying she was a 2-year-old! Yikes! I wonder if trying to get her out of her baby seat took extra time and that's how the extensive burns happened. :-(

KEYT's article quotes a neighbor as saying that the 2 year old child was left alone in the vehicle and that his own wife rescued the child from the burning car. He said that he believed that the child's mother had just gone inside a nearby home.

I wondered why my neighbor was the one carrying the child toward the firemen rather than the mother when they finally appeared. Very odd situation. It was all very strange and when the father (?) arrived he did not say anything. Perhaps was not able to communicate in the same language as the authorities on hand.

Noozhawk article said " woman came out with the child " which seems to be they were referring to the mother. Not neighbor 2yr old, left in the car.... Don't even know why you would do that.

The mother was working, had no one to care for her child. So many working mothers face this dilemma. I'm assuming this mother had no idea about a few things: the laws, how to get help with her child, that her vehicle was unsafe. She had to get to work or get fired. I bet the "employer" of the mother had no clue and possibly didn't care about the mothers dilemma to make this choice. I imagine how terrible the mother feels, and how if she faces legal charges she will lose her child. Imagine how the child feels, with a memory of almost being burned alive, the suffering of the scars she'll have forever, no mother to care for her.

The mother had to get to work? meaning she was going to leave the child unattended in an unlocked car all day? Surely there was a better arrangement than that.

Yes 891. We don't know the details of this terrible event, but it's very common for domestic workers to bring children with them. School may not be session, the child may be ill or the parents can’t afford to pay for care that costs more than they earn while wiping the butts of the rich. When I was married to a wealthy man, his family was surrounded by "the help". Sometimes, they had to bring their little ones. A lot of these privileged "employers" think children in their home are a liability. It's also VERY psychological - they don't want to know that those who scrub their toilets are people too, with families. As the struggling single mother of a young child now, I get it. I’d make popcorn and find toys or books to help keep them busy while Mom was scrubbing sinks and Dad was cutting the lawn. But A LOT of employers will fire a worker for showing up with their child. Sometimes people just have to do what they have to do to survive. Many prayers to that little child and her family.

KCOY news online has a brief update as of 1030 PM on the 26th. The employer is quoted as saying the mother worked as a caregiver for him and his wife for 8 months and he never knew she had a child. She was only in the house about five minutes. Hellish thing to happen.

if you cannot facilitate proper care for a child don't have one. there's no excuse for negligent behavior when it puts a 2 yr old's life at risk.
