It sounded close to me on West Mesa but how can you be sure it was a gunshot?

I'd think you'd want to call the cops, even if you weren't entirely sure of the location. If a crime were to be discovered later, it could help the cops to know when and where suspects/vehicles might have been, based on the earlier report of gunshots. But what do I know?!

Recently someone posted here about hearing gunshots near north Patterson and was very confident about the caliber even. I responded that I'd recently been told by an officer that one should always report any suspected gunshots and never assume it's fireworks or something else. I got slammed here for my comment. Seems like the sentiment has changed and people think it's a good idea now. Glad to see it. I'd hope people in my neighborhood would look out for others and report it. I know I will if I hear something that sounds like shots fired.

Natureboy.... ya think a reporting party would NOT have mentioned calling the police if they had before posting here? C'mon, man... you've been around a while.

Maybe someone is night hunting for coyotes. They should use a surpressor or a cross bow to keep local agitation to a minimum.

I live on Oak Park, and at midnight I heard what sounded like a car backfire, but it sounded far away. I thought it could of been a gunshot, too. I didn't call dispatch, as I wasn't sure what it could have been... But, seems it was heard all the way to Oak Park...

191 - yeah, better just to not bother the cops, right? WRONG! After the shooting death on Tuesday night, there is concern for retaliation from the Westside. This was on the Westside. Therefore, the cops SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED.

What exactly are you expecting the police to do in response to a report of gunshots heard from Modoc to Mission? Canvas each homeowner in that area? If you can't report something like "shots fired from the 1100 block of Hacienda at midnight" or something pretty specific then you are sending them on a wild goose chase and they will go on calls where they have a chance of catching the criminal. Certainly they will log your call and the beat cop should review it to see if there is a pattern that they can identify and pursue. That is the usefulness of calling. Maybe someday they will have surveillance satellites or drones everywhere and you will be able to access the realtime footage to see if you can spot the muzzle flashes. Otherwise just read the 2nd amendment and hope that the gunshots were from a well-regulated militia member.

I didn't hear the one at midnight, but definitely heard two shots around 2:15, they woke me up. Problem was I wasn't sure if I had dreamt it or not. Otherwise would've phone it in.

The west rises again. Gun fights will soon become the norm again if certain parties get their way.

You can and should call 897-2410. Ask "Dispatch" to have officer(s) respond to possible shots fired. Be sure and have any good info to relate, making note of such, at the time. Meaning: try to share exact time and possible location of shots. You will be asked your name and phone number. Don't hesitate to call in on such events.

Folks, I hate to disappoint you, but I live in that area and have heard gun shots several times over the past few years. I called 911 the first few times, only to find out the police rarely respond to those calls. In fact I called back to follow-up and was told "it's probably fireworks". I explained I was very familiar with guns, and know the difference in the sounds of guns and fireworks. Not really counting much on police assistance these days. For those of you that are, I feel sorry for you.

070: What these Edhat posts are good for are the real-time news being passed along to the people of SB. We cannot count on other news agencies to report the violence here in real-time, if at all. If you are not scared, concerned or pay attention to the violence that is now part of SB, the next victim could be the unaware! Edhat has informed us (through citizen input as well as Roger's) of dangerous situations around us that we were VERY appreciative to be informed of. Kept us out of harm's way.

I heard the bang at midnight but it was in the distance. I live on State by Mission and figured it was backfire from a car. What are you supposed to do when you hear a noise like that in the distance? It seems to me like a futile effort to call the police when it's impossible to tell where the noise came from.

I live in Mission Canyon and have reported gun shots at least 4 times over the last few years. They are real! Call 911 immediately. Someone is doing this all over our town and it'll take a huge effort to stop them. Do not over-think this situation. Call 911.

7062... I totally agree. We love to have stories to share with friends and neighbours but are reluctant to call in the authorities half expecting someone else to do it or fearing we'll be labelled a snitch or a rat. When fear overrides good sense the bangers have won. Seriously folks, cops aren't telepathic and I bet they'd rather be working than waiting for calls that don't come in.

Not sure what these posts are good for except causing undue fear in some people. If you think you heard shots call the Police and then report on what they tell you. If you read Edhat you might think there are people shooting off firearms all the time and I do not think that is true.

More gunshots?? Seriously people CALL THE POLICE!!! Did you not read about the young person who just died from being shot on the west side? Please help the police department help us! Firecracker or firearm, it doesnt matter it is worth the call to the police to investigate. What if someone WAS shot and died because everyone decided to post on Edhat instead of feeling silly about calling the cops? I dont mean to pick on anyone but it takes a collaberated effort with our local police force to keep our city safe! Myself included we are all responsible to help.

Yes, I heard the bang around midnight. Wasn't sure if it was a gun shot or firecracker. I probably should have called police in retrospect. However, I didn't hear anything at 2:15 (I was asleep).
