The guy may have died because of gang activity. That's why we care. Get rid of these gangs so nobody else dies.

So, this darkens the picture of living downtown. Up 'til now, these attacks, gang-related or not, have been stabbings, with guns not used. Stabbings are one-person directed; bullets have a greater range.

Living in the general downtown, eastside, westside, too, going for walks after dark with one's small dog, have become quite a bit more fearsome. It will be interesting... to read the city government's reaction, attempts to reassure the citizenry of Santa Barbara.

Indeed, respect and sorrow for the person who died and his family, and also for the rest of us living in that general area.

Of course it matters if it was gang related! It just lends more support for an injunction! Get these killers off the streets!

I would never walk down there alone at night, gangs are everywhere on the Eastside in that area.

376586 - Who cares??? You better well care, because if this was an eastside/westside killing then there will definitely be payback coming in the form of more bullets flying. And you might just be unlucky enough to be driving nearby when it all goes down.

RIP... heart goes out to the family who lost a loved one last night.

Cam Sanchez needs to get his act together and reign in these gangs. He brought the problem to Santa Barbara and he needs to get rid of it! I don't like to think of people as worthless, but Cam is mighty close.

Can anyone offer an explanation why gangs exist? What useful purpose do they serve for participants? It all seems so chimp-like, low-life and primitive.

So im supposed to be scared to walk or drive on the eastside now that an attack that "might have been gang related" happened? I think not.

My point was that if it was gang related or not WHO CARES, a man died and that is whats really sad here.

you people take it way to far.

Only a few blocks from me in an otherwise pretty 'safe' neighborhood. Surprising.

Shot while riding his bike, reports the Independent.

As for not walking at night in your neighborhood, on the city streets, where, exactly, do you expect your dog to poop? And even more important, whose streets are they, if not ours, to walk in safety. That's seemed a rather safe neighborhood.

659- all we know is that the suspects were "hispanic" (big surprise). Who knows, they might be 3rd or 4th generation residents. Either way, once again, hispanic gang members (and yes this was gang related - read the Indy article) have killed. They will keep killing and maiming each other and innocent bystanders until we DO SOMETHING!

GANG INJUNCTION NOW!

I’m amazed and shocked at some of these comment. I have been working with Jr. High and H.S. kids on the E. S. of SB for the past 5 years. I have worked closely with every type of kid. Some in gangs, some that are surrounded by that life style and others who are normal kids. There is never going to be an over night solution to the violence. It breaks my heart to hear about deaths in our community and even more when i know kids. My wife and I (and our new baby) live on the east side. I was raised in SB. I care about the community and the every kind of family. We have spent the last 5 years investing in the lives of young people. We have loved them unconditionally and cared for them in tough situations.
They have called us in the middle of the night asking for help. We have had gang members in our home. We have loved them like any other person in our lives. We have seen kids that we love make bad choices. Some keep making those mistakes, not all have been involved with gangs. Other kids have changed their lives completely because of a caring adult taking the time to invest in them; to take them out to lunch, to guide them, to play with them, to be a solid stable adult in their life. For me that is what will change the lives of these kids, to show them another way to live, to have some one care enough to not automatically write them off because of how they look or act. To take the time, may be years for some, to invest in a relationship that is different from any other relationship in their life. Patience is key; knowing why kids get involved in gangs and who gangs work helps too.

Anyone know when the last SB murder was, any how many total there were last year? Couldn't find it on Google.

I commend you, FELIPECON3. I think in order to find a solution it takes ideas and the experience of those who have worked with those in gangs, or have grown up around them. I think the police department has its job in taking violence off the streets, but it will also take more people willing and able to work with those kids, and even those adults who want to live a better life. For those who don't, or who commit crimes, they need to be held accountable for their crimes, instead of getting out of jail early for overcrowding. I don't have answers. I won't pretend to have answers. I also don't think I'm in a place to judge those who are trying. I have lived her for a few years, my husband was born and raised here. I can't say that I really follow the politics here, or am truly familiar with the part Cam Sanchez has played in helping/hurting the effort to curb the violence, which is why I, myself, cannot judge. I hope there is a way to bring an end to all this, not only for our city, but our country.

Now it is murder regardless of why. The subsequent investigation and trial will sort out all the facts.

For the most part.

I bet these guys know who did it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lfz8EcJN2fM and they can always be found at the Santa Bruta Eastside KSR hangout next door to Sals Pizza at 900 N. Milpas conveniently located close to SBHS.

604: I read the article in the Independent. It does NOT say it was gang-realted, it says the officer is not in a position to say. It DOES say the victim was a “white male”. I don't know if this was gang related and neither do you.

I am a little white old lady who regularly walks along Milpas, and near Montecito St. and the library area, sometimes a bit at night during a bad night. All those tough young men, sometimes standing in groups, are very polite to the abuela walking by. I am completely off their radar of gang-related violence and I am safe. Thus I am so sad to possibly see the knives turning into guns in SB because it introduces the specter of accidental woundings and deaths and the possible escalation to drive-bys, and definitely means less safety for the innocent pedestrian.

Can we please not obliterate Sal's Pizzas while we're just futzing around with speculations and hearsay? They are wonderful people with great thin-crust pizza, just getting their customer base together after many years of hard work at it.

One more thing about the Sal's Pizza area: Every school day, a large group of SB High School students go to lunch in the one and a half blocks on Milpas that have Sal's, Panderia/La Tapatia and The Shop, all about a block from the SB Bowl. These are neighborhood kids. Do you really think their parents would let them eat there if they didn't know it was a safe area? Get a grip.

I decided to see if fewer students ARE eating on Milpas after families presumably have heard the news of the shooting and assessed the dangers. There appears to be about the same number of kids.

Felipcon3: i find it dispointing that, after 5 years of working with kids on the Eastside, you characterize the kids who are not in gangs, or who are not surrounded by that lifestyle, as " normal"... REALLY?

222- I think you misread my post. I mean that I have worked with many types of kids: some involved in gangs, some not, some that are around that life style and other kids who are just normal teenage kids. Are you familiar with what kids these days deal with? Do you know what goes on in their world? I think that to some kids living on the east side hearing or seeing gang related anything is "normal." They live in a different world and many don't know what it is like.
