If you want a safer neighborhood, install video cameras. Not more guns. This wouldn't have happened in front of a camera.

Really? Sort of like if you installed cameras in banks there would be no more bank robberies?

If that were true 484 England would be crime free! There are camera's everywhere and crime still happens at similar rates to the pre camera era. Cameras can help in prosecuting criminals but just having cameras present does not stop crime.
Stupid and or desperate people will not change their actions just because someone may be watching.
Just look at the recent elevator rape case in a downtown parking lot, that was all caught on camera!

Cameras don't stop crime. Nothing is going to stop crime. It's been happening for hundreds and thousands of years. Accept reality.

Feel free to put up a camera, on your property, along with a sign letting everyone know your home is gun free 484.

Yeah, to say cameras would have stopped this is a little farcical.

That being said, no reason this kid had to die because of a gun. We really need to do something about gun violence.

Welcome to Santa Angeles. You wanted the developers and the LA crowd to come here. Here they are. Get used to it. It's going to get worse.

If you really, I mean really, want to reduce gun violence you have to do more than give lip service to thoughts that leave you warm and fuzzy and go off as if you have contributed.

If you really want to make a change, the fabric of American society needs to be reweaved.

Let's start with Hollywood and limit the violence in movies and on TV. Make gun safety lessons mandatory in any media that portrays the use of firearms.

Ya I know...won't happen...but it bugs me to see the Rhode's Scholars turned actors making millions from violence tell us how we must give up our 2nd Ammendment rights!

Rant off!

Just a couple of gangbangers killing each other. Why the shock and outrage? A camera might help ID the shooter (a shaved head and white shirt isn't exactly atypical in some neighborhoods). And if I'd seen it I'd keep walking even with a CCW...who wants to get in the middle of such nonsense unless they're actually threatening an innocent bystander?

May be if it's a really big camera, like a 1982 handycam. That might scare them away.

Two points:
a) Agree with 521 that too much of "LA" shows up on our streets. SB is fresh meat for these punks. Memes are contagious, and the gang-banger, shaved-head, bling-covered toughs are becoming more prevalent, and dangerous. More of a predator class we don't need.
b) Always appreciate John Palminteri's reporting. But he's often a one-man show. The thing I do wish for from "LA" is more on-the-ground journalism plus a credible daily newspaper. Blogs like this are great, but in-depth reports by professionals are too rare. More people need to be informed about what happens every day.

Why does the Santa Barbara Housing Authority allow know gang members (and their supporting Mommies) to benefit from public housing? These are taxpayer supported housing units- You have to "qualify" to live in one of the 15000, units on the South Coast...(?)

528 - I agree! Even if I was packing, I wouldn't lift a finger to help out in a "gang fight". Not because I'm insensitive, but because:

1. You never know how many of their buddies are packing too

2. You never know which guy to shoot when everyone has their guns drawn.

Kind of makes you think a CCW is as pointless as everyone says it is. Hmmmmmm....

How about the people with guns put up a sign saying "gun free property" and then dispense some frontier justice when people try to rob them? It's a shame to have all those guns just sitting around gathering dust.

As for the housing authority, don't you remember when professionals were lying and getting loans to buy rental properties, the Authority said they didn't have the resources to actually check the info on the applications? So they probably can't check for gang connections or criminal history either.

the Housing Authority does NOT do thorough background checks. I personally lived in the same complex of a convicted drug felon that was reported in newspapers.

@548, we already have a sign out front that says "Never mind dog, beware of owner". Our home has never been burglarized, but neighbor's unfortunately have.

What do u guys mean when saying L.A. is coming up here? There's been gang members here for a very long time and will always be here, just like every other city/town in the U.S.. compared to a lot of towns our size, the problem here is minimal in comparison. Also, if the tables were turned and a guy from SB was in a Ventura neighborhood, the outcome would have been similar. Point is it's been going on for years.

Well said 491.

COMMENT 376577 helpful negative off topic

Have to disagree with 491, primarily on the basis that there is no credible evidence that violence in the media contributes in any meaningful way to increased violence in society.

Indeed, if this were true, the violent crime rate would actually be way up instead of down from historic highs twenty years ago.

The reality is that our current hyper-connected society leads to a more "informed" (and I use that word loosely) populace that has a much higher awareness of the violence that does occur.

Crime is the same as it was in the 70's,80's, 90's?
Having lived here through that time, I can tell you it's not.

COMMENT 376595 helpful negative off topic

2013-02-20 11:27 AM

Overall crime is down from the early 90s when crime rates more or less peaked. I don't know how you got "same" out of anything I wrote.

At any rate, the fact that the overall violent crime rate is down dramatically (using homicides as an example: down from 9.8 homicides per 100,000 people ~1991 to 4.8 per 100,000 in 2010) is an empirical fact. This does not mean that crime in various areas may not be higher than historical norms or experience occasional increases, especially in conjunction with depressed economic activity.

But to run around and crow about how the crime rate is so terrible and there's an epidemic of crime in this country and how we all need guns or whatever is disingenuous and harms any rational debate.

Also worth mentioning that fully two thirds of homicides in America are committed with a firearm. Just putting that out there.

Stop pretending gangs come from LA (or anywhere else). Santa Barbara has a long history of local gangs and most of their members were born and raised here.

Maybe it's not gang related at all maybe the bicyclist was riding on the sidewalk and he tried to run those two fellers down.

BTW! When is KEYT going to start reporting TODAY'S news. It seems that all I ever hear on KEYT is what I heard yesterday everywhere else. If Palmintary (sp?) was there shooting at 7 PM, don't you think four hours is more than enough to get his video onto the 11PM news?! NOT!!

I came here in 1980 and there were alot more murders in the early 80's here than there are now. Also in the early 90's unless of course they somehow get away with not reporting them all which is a real possiblity.
