Amazing. If you have money, you simply cough up the restitution, and you get away with ragefully fracturing someone's eye socket.
Your charge is lowered to nothing more serious than littering.
Nothing like enabling violence in society.

Naw they do it all the time in court..lower Felonies down to lesser charges. It just happens this guy is well known so you actually hear about it. That's the DA's work right there..it saves the County money, gives the person "a deal" and gives a "win" to the DA's office. It's not about justice it's about making things easy and making the DA's office look good. Welcome to the justice system.

That's actually not what it's about. He had no prior records. Sometimes good people do stupid things. I think he showed remorse, had a history of not being a Loser and the right thing happened here. I had a wobbler when I was 20, had no prior issues, just a stupid drunken mistake when I was young. They did the same thing for me and I'm far from rich.. So it's not about the money. It doesn't excuse what he did, but facts show he has tried to make it right by taking responsibility for his actions.

They make "deals" for people and lessen levels for people with records a mile long too.

Wonder why Joyce Dudley didn't "announce" this.

74, right on!
I am for giving people a break (no pun intended) and second chances, but he did not scrape someone up, or get in a fender bender. He punched someone HARD and he is a football player who probably works out at a gym constantly. That is brutal force by definition.
We have become so lenient and made obvious assaultive and violent behavior nothing more than a sneeze or cough. To save money? Too make prisons less crowded? Whatever. If you are the one on the receiving end (again, no pun intended) of violence it stays with your for life. Unlike his punishment.

It's not that we've become lenient, per se. It's more that we place such a high value on athletes/musicians/actors (see also: celebrities) that we are willing to absolve them of real judgment for their crimes because then someone somewhere would get sad because their team wouldn't get to the Super Bowl/their favorite musician wouldn't win a Grammy/their favorite actor wouldn't get an Oscar.

It's shameful, and a reflection of how messed up our values have become that we place fame over responsibility.

$42k was not enough. Should have been 100

-741, you don't think the $42,000 covered the victim's medical and other expenses?

I imagine the only way we will know if the $42,000 wasn't enough is if the victim sues the defendant. My guess is that the restitution paid by the defendant to the victim was sufficient. We'll see.

Hope the victim sues the bully. Having medical bills and a broken door paid for doesn't cover the pain and all of having his skull busted; for no reason, the poor guy did nothing, someone else provoked the bully by calling from the balcony. The football "star" had no prior record only because he'd never been caught before.
