The article says the expenditure was $8K for two trikkes so unless I'm really lost on the "new math" that's $4K per trikke. Looking as though one is having fun on a toy does not inspire respect or authority. Oh well.

499: Agreed. But 8 grand seems crazy. And they vetoed segways due to the dork factor, but these aren't exactly what I'd call cool (although I do want one, and think it's better than a segway). Christ, get a cheap moped, and put training wheels on it if balance is such a big deal... You could outfit the entire PD with the cost of a single trikke. (Course, the way SB spends, a moped would probably be 3 grand...)

If they move faster than a human can run and have a decent range than I welcome them to the quiver of law enforcement tools. Much cheaper than additional cars and far greater visibility for the officers to see what's happening. They may look silly but for the crooks who get chased down and arrested by a trikke-bound cop the silly factor won't make much difference.

If they really wanted to go green, they could have gone with the Brammo all electric motorcycle like the Ashland, OR police department did. No they aren't used in high speed pursuits, but they are great for patrolling around town.

My first thought is that the first time an officer dismounts one of these things to take a report from a witness of victim the trike will get stolen.

Are they going to ride these in the street or on the sidewalks? I just don't see how these things could be any better than a bicycle. Plus, if I were a crook and some cop started "chasing" me on a trike, I'd have a hard time running while laughing!

Criminals won't have a chance! It's hard to run when you're laughing at what's chasing you... Serious question, why can't the Police walk in high profile areas? If you are chasing a criminal through a crowd, you must be faster on foot, than trying to not hit someone on a trikke. And if mobility around the area is an issue, put them on bikes... and not $4k bikes!
