Police station staff used to prop open the side door, next to the parking lot, with a stick. You could walk through the parking lot and into the station completely bypassing security. I used to go that route when visiting friends that worked there.

Such a bummer now I'm going to have to get in shape and climb the fance to walk thru the parking lot.

I like the blurb about someone stealing a police bicycle.

That's cool - I bet it is funding a 70 LED TV and an XBox in the break room too.

Want to know why our federal Govt is beyond broke?

These types of superfluous grants for ridiculous reasons.

COMMENT 374319 helpful negative off topic

2013-02-14 10:36 AM

So was a bike being stolen the best reason they can come up with? I get the point, I understand the sentiment, but I don't think they're enough to warrant this unless the police have had $215,000 worth of damages done within the last 20 years at least (they'll have to replace the gates again by this amount of time). Somehow I strongly doubt that's true.

More information on the reasons behind why this is 100% necessary would be MUCH APPRECIATED, besides that "cars have been tampered with" (vague) and ONE bicycle stolen.

Hey Dept of Homeland "Security" - why don't you spend that money fixing the fence at the BORDER! That's your job isn't it?

Bunch of money wasting goofs!

why doesn't the SBPD simply say - thanks but no thanks. Cam Sanchez: "Although we would like to have a more secure parking area, given the budget issues at all levels of government we can not consciously accept this grant. There are simply many other higher priority areas this amount of money can be used for or even better yet not spend the money at all!".

Hey Dept.of Homeland Security tell us why you have bought 1.6 Billion rounds of small arms ammo in the last 10 mounths? Yes thats 1.6 BILLION rounds

COMMENT 374367 helpful negative off topic

Back when I was in high school & we used to cruse state street, sometimes we'd flirt with someone who kind of scared us & we'd cruise to the police department. Problem solved.

COMMENT 374369 helpful negative off topic

They haven't bought 1.6 billion rounds yet, 363. It is a planned buy spanning four to five years, and they already use as much as 15 million rounds per year during training exercises, shooting ranges, etc.

Everything is cheaper in bulk.

I believe in security and privacy at work. My company is badge access only. It is safer. We don't have it for safety - we have it because we manufacture products for military/aerospace but it has made a huge positive difference. I think workplace and work parking lots should be private and secure. The police handle sensitive issues constantly - they need privacy to do their jobs - it is no one's damn business. This constant whining for transparency is just annoying. I keep it close and respect other's need to do so too.

380 - your company has security badges due to business concerns. I used to work for a large medical device company and we had the same thing - due to concerns of corporate spying.

This is not the case at the SBPD.

363 is right about the bullets though it is now up to 1.7 billion rounds of hollow point. What is our Goverment getting ready for? 1.7 billion is about 500% too much for training. Why the F#$% would we need an armored freakin tank is SB. Drug house get real.

Well said 370. Get ready for the civilian army errr SS Obama wants to spy on fellow Americans.

Because the government clearly doesn't have a vast, advanced military apparatus ready and waiting to be used to subjugate the populace if it so chose.

I mean, seriously. Come on. Do you ever think this stuff through? The lack of critical thinking in conspiracy theories like this really baffle me.

The main post office in Goleta has a fence or two, they also have badges. How did Jennifer Santamaria get in there to kill several people?

The Government is bulking up every city across America in case the masses have a problem with all the "Hope and Change" that is coming. Banning certain guns will lead to most guns, then almost all guns. No more armed citizens.... = easy to control.

$4000.00 electric trikes? They will cause more accidents when the drivers will be looking and saying "WTF". Will they have cameras as well?

COMMENT 374369 helpful negative off topic

Can we stop with the bogus, hyperbolic "IF THEY TAKE AWAY THE GUNS ONLY 38% OF THE POPULATION OWNS THEY WILL CONTROL US ALL!!!" nonsense? Plenty of first world countries are just as free as America and have no gun ownership or heavily restricted gun ownership. It's a total logical fallacy and makes it really difficult to have a sensible conversation about reducing the epidemic of gun violence in this country.

I just want to say it is totally reasonable to have a gate. The police are entitled to no less than condo complexes, shopping centers and parks have so that access is at least restricted. That's all. Thank you to the police who protect us.

You can build a whole house for 200,000!!! What the hell is going on these days. I can't tell the difference between LE and the military anymore. Tanks, drones, machine guns. Just exactly what are they scared of from the civilians? The excuse that they protect us is not valid. We now fear them more than ever. I want to leave this country. I feel like I was lied to my entire life about how free we really are. How can we turn back the clock? I want to throw up. My country was a lie the entire time.

Sounds a little silly doesn't it: the police spend $200,000 to keep their stuff from being stolen? What are the poor civilians suppose to do to protect their stuff? If that fence doesn't scream: "The police are doing a crappy job", I don't know what does.

The price of the fence/gate is about 4 times too high. Ditto with the scooters. We're broke. The cops shouldn't have to protect their parking lot from people walking through it. Government is here to serve us, not the other way around. If you look at secured federal buildings, large arms and ammo purchases by the government (while trying to restrict what citizens can buy), ridiculous expenditures from DHS all over the country for armored vehicles, spy drones, etc. -- with NOTHING being done for normal middle class working (or not) people -- combined with financial industry cronies being too big to jail -- rational minds do tend to start questioning motivations and entertaining conspiracy theories. The stench of corruption and the evidence of government inefficiency &/or insanity is becoming overwhelming.

These are the strangest comments I've ever seen on Edhat. Based on them, I'm glad the police got a gate for their lot, and they might want to think about bulletproof glass for their offices, too.

As much as we don't mind increasing cop salaries and pensions, we have refused to give them a decent building to work in. Even Santa Maria did that for their force.
