where is this money coming from? I am sure you can get volunteers to do this for free - government please stop spending money on non-essential things!!!

I believe this is a good thing and a little suprised there was not already a full database. The bigger story was at the end talking about how Police will now contribute to their PERS fund. That is good news.

Volunteers already DID do the work for free. I know because I was one of them. It takes an historic consultant to train the volunteers. The money being asked for today is for inputting the information gathered by the volunteers into the system. Let's see, the waterfront survey was done in 2002 and it's only now being funded for inputting into the system? That tells you two things: 1) housing bubble trumps historic preservation, 2) the local government is so UNDERfunded that it's at least10 years behind that we know of.
