What a nice idea. For the cop's sake, hope they don't get too many cranky or paranoid crackpots showing up.

McDonald's doesn't have donuts. Coffee, cop, donut. It's how it is supposed to work.

I wonder if these cops are on duty and supposed to be patrolling while they do this public relations façade?

364679 - I think this is a very good strategy by our police. Listening to community members, and getting them involved is a positive in the long run.

@685 I'm sure that's what you think.

Getting cops out of there cars and interacting with citizens instead of suspects is a good idea. They can learn about neighborhood concerns and problems first hand, answer questions in an unstressed environment, and also get a sense of who's who in the communities. It would be best if our cops could all reside in town, but economics makes that nearly impossible.

So many cynics out there. I personally do NOT like law enforcement officers of any kind, but I DO like the idea of those who do like them, or those who can at least tolerate speaking with them in an informal way, having and taking the opportunity to say what's on their minds relative to crime in their (citizen's) neighborhoods. You'll never catch me attending one of these events, but I support them for those who will find them useful. Jeeze people, try to open your minds a little...

Got to agree with 695 on this. I like the idea, although am unlikely to participate, personally.

Police have a tough time of it, their perspective of humanity is skewed towards the criminal by nature of their work. Getting in touch and conversing with your average Jane or Joe has to be a good thing for everyone involved.

Great idea. Now let's bring back the strolling cop. That would help a lot on State St. It would be worth it, just from the public relations aspect.

Question: Did SBPD crack down on skate boarders and bicyclists on the sidewalks? I was downtown yesterday and saw NOT ONE miscreant skater or biker up on the sidewalk. Highly unusual.

McDonald's coffee sucks, that's the only fault I can find with this idea/program .... sorry for being such a coffee snob.

McDonalds coffee is sooooo much better than Starbucks, Daily Grind, Tea Leaf. . . but not better than Peet's.

@709, yes there is a downtown beat cop, it is Officer Beutel. @713, this is one of many 'coffee with a cop' events that is moved around the city. I believe the website says the next one is at Starbucks.

696P, "So many cynics out there. I personally do NOT like law enforcement officers of any kind" REALLY??? Nice remark by the way it sounds maybe it's you who should sit and have coffee with a mirror and ask yourself what your issue is with cops. Most cops are very friendly. These are people who do a job that is very stressful. Most of the time these are individuals who respond to a call where the other person is already in an agitated state or a victim of a crime. These individuals take a lot of cr#p from people because they wear a uniform. Get over yourself and shake a hand of a dedicated law enforcement officer who will put themselves in harms way to protect you.....

I can't believe the EDhaters on this site. I am disgusted and disturbed by the lack of respect towards the police officers (and other public servants in this town). I hope you all you snobs choke on the "homeless", gangbangers, and other great citizens that you dwell amongst- This is another example of why SB is a truly sick community...

Why would I want to waste my time talking to beat cop Kasi Beutel? What's she going to tell me except how to game the worker comp program, how to lie under oath, how to forge other people's signatures and how best to administer electro-shock assault and battery?

I'm always impressed with how I see police officers interacting with the public, especially the difficult ones on State Street. It's a thankless job, much less than being a firefighter, so despite all the haters I wish them well. My son is a police officer in Florida and it he deals with the depressing underbelly of life everyday but I'm proud that he does what he does.

I can't make it but if anyone reads this please tràin your probabtion officers how to drive. One nearly slammed into me as I had a green turn arrow and he had a no turn on red. Two days ago one put so much pressure riding so close as I did the speed limit driving down the 154. Please and thank you.

Thank you, SBPD, for reaching out to our community. Please know that there are many of us who appreciate the challenges you face and the risks you take each day on the job to protect and support the citizens of SB.

I thought the down town beat cop was Aron Tudor? Oh wait that is the down town beat down cop.....it would be great if these cops took some notes and absorbed some of what people are laying down for them at these informal meetings. Not sure, is that the case or are they just gathering intel for more revenue generation? I think it is a good idea. humanize the job and the people they are enforcing the law upon. Let em know where the gang BS is congregating. Like the poster above says, a lot of times you are dealing with the dregs and one can be jaded. Other times, I think some of the junior mints are a little over zealous with their new badges of power.

I wonder who the "cop haters" are going to call if they are robbed, beat up, in an injury accident, etc. Let us know how you'd handle the situations. Police have a horrible job, willing to listen to citizens' concerns over coffee will help with their work.

Flicka - I know people who wouldn't call a cop. I also know people who didn't call a cop. When you're already having a bad day, you don't need a cop to make it worse for you.

Thank You Police.

Law enforcement is one of those professions that just about everyone thinks they know how to do better than the people who are trained for it and actually do it every day...

This was to inform police of concerns. Therefore, if people aren't happy with the police work or concerned they're going to say so. If you all don't want to hear concerns then start a feed about the good they do. I'm sure others would have a lot of nice things to say

this would be totally unnecessary if we could return to the community policing model. instead we pay them overtime to crowd a local coffee shop, brilliant! to the enabling coffee shops: i will take my business/tips elsewhere.

@626 Where do you get the overtime idea from? I called the police department and there are no Officers on overtime for 'coffee with a cop'. This is community policing.

730, if they're in uniform they're getting paid. if you think they cut down beat shifts to accommodate time spent at coffee with a cop you're naive.
