I don't have a dog, because I care for birds that are not pets. But I do have a personal little Lovebird for a companion, and lots of other people also have birds for pets.

Birds are definitely under-appreciated. I bet you could get a lot of responses from pet bird owners, if you added that category to your weekly postings. Just saying.

I hope I live to see the day when humans stop incarcerating birds in cages. I have had two birds, both of whom found me by wandering into my yard.

There is no such thing as providing them with enough freedom or companionship. Birds belong with other birds, out in the open where they can fly and forage and mate. Keeping birds is barbaric and cruel.

Birds are beautiful, and thus humans want to keep them nearby. Please don't ever encourage anyone to buy or cage birds.

Emuwren - I totally agree in concept with you, but the reality is that there are thousands of unwanted bird given up each year after their owners decide they're more work than they anticipated.

I myself have worked full-time in wild bird rescue, rehabilitation and education for the last 21 years. Several unwanted parrots have lived out their lives with me, and the little lovebird I have now was given to me.

She has a lovely home, and spends most of the day with me, out of her cage, on me and near me, so your generalization does not apply here. She is an affectionate and happy little thing, and I adore her.

I currently also care for 7 previously injured but non-releasable wild birds of prey and use them in educational programs (they would have otherwise been euthanized). Two of them have lived with me for 14 years.

I agree that parrots should be kept in the wild. Compared to dogs and cats, they still are wild birds, but what about the ones that are abandoned or unwanted? What should we do with them?

Have you ever worked with birds?

I agree with both EmuWren and EITS --- actually, each is saying the same thing: birds should not be pets; EITS adds to it by asking what to do for those birds that have been bought and then abandoned?

37 years ago, younger and stupider, in a pet store in Cambridge, I was talked into buying a parrot. She's traveled and lived with me since and I love her. A year and a half ago, I got a rescue dog, hoping they'd get along. He might have; she took one look and said or showed the equivalent of, "Out, damned Spot!"

So, we've adapted for the last year and a half - she gets much more cage time; he goes to dog bed earlier and rises later than would otherwise have been so, so she can walk around. I would undo what I did but I now love the little dog.

When others have met my bird, a yellow-naped Amazon, they've ooohed and aahhed and I have said, "Never, just NEVER buy a bird, even a domestically-raised one. They're wild creatures and should be so." ...But what to do when they're for sale in pet stores? ... I turn and walk away, saddened, quite sure that whoever ends up buying that bird will keep it in a cage. Ogden Nash could have said the same thing about a parrot (or any bird): "To see a robin in a cage, puts all heaven in a rage." I think that a bird unbought is one bird that's saved from a cage-prison life.

Understanding what I innocently did so long ago, I have tried to expiate that sin by volunteering at the SB Wildlife Care Network for the last 12+ years, with the birds. ...But what to do for my bird-friend who most certainly will outlive me?

I think we should have a person of the week instead. They are far more interesting than dogs.

044 even though you did not say what you said well, I believe you are right. Ed does not get it. The efforts put in to animals might be better directed toward Children of the week or Volunteer of the week or Teacher or Employee as examples. Here's hoping. 044 was nannied

Ed has a Non-Profit of the week and that's a great source. Seems like most people will say kinder things about dogs than people. If they posted a "person of the week," it's too easy for others to bash them on these comment threads.

Oh come on, lighten up! I love the Dog & Cat of the Week features, and I'm sure the majority of Edhat readers do too. Somehow a simple request for more photos turned into a discussion of bird cruelty. Getting back to the original point, it would be nice to see more pictures of local pets.

People love the Dog & Cat of the Week feature -- these items get more "reads" than many other topic. Even this call for nominations has almost 500 reads within a few hours.

You lighten up, REXOFSB! :) I, too, like the Dog & Cat of the Week features -- much of the rest of Edhat is about people so it's nice to have a posting about pets - and I love the commentary and comments here. (351263P)

Love Dog & Cat of the week! I just sent in pictures and info on my cute doggy (yes, this is my personal opinion) and if you aren't interested, just don't click on the link when it comes out. There are plenty of other edhat topics on a daily basis to interest you; I don't find EVERY topic on edhat interesting, but I realize it isn't tailored to my exact taste. It's Friday, shouldn't we all be in a good mood about the sunny weekend ahead?? :)

Dog and Cat people are very vocal, not neccessarily numerous compared to the majority of readers. Maybe Ed could poll readers, limiting responces to 1 per IP address to limit voting many times. Then learn how to expand readership and understand the demographic of readers. A market survey --without using a skewed poll like the one previously put to the readership some months ago. We want Edhat to be successful. Good Luck

Regarding the comment that dog/cat people are vocal, but not necessarily numerous compared to the majority of readers.... the Humane Society reports that there are 78 million dogs in the US and 86 million cats. 60% of American households own dogs and/or cats. I think Edhat IS representing its readership. And, this is just ONE small item out of an entire week of news, so just skip it if it isn't of interest.

Dog Cat Bird - fun photos that brighten the day of edhat folks - My grandfather raised parakeets - after grandma died..
I was young and amazed - as he would let them out all day - while he went about his day they would land on him - hand, shoulder, knee, they had a great connection - they were happy - which made him happy - we have 2 dogs - getting pictures together to send in ;

Net Net - Relax, Enjoy, Lighten Up.......

I love all the animal pictures...animals in the wild, properly cared for zoo and wildlife rescue animals, and all types of beloved pets.

I learned my love of animals from pets in our home and visits to what were at the time pretty awful zoos, which have thankfully, over time, become much better zoos.

Thank you to the bird people for helping care for and educate others about keeping birds.

The more we learn about each other (animals & people) the better able we are to respect each others needs.

I would prefer to only see cats and dogs of the week.
Once you start adding other animals to the mix, it's no longer a cute furry baby but now we have to look at your lame bird or ugly ferret or even worse, scaly reptile.
Owners of those "other" animals are kinda like those parents with ugly children.
:( They got a face only a parent could love.
LOL

OK - how about animal of the month with the critter of the week being showcased? Iguanas, ferrets, silverfish, etc.

If you don't have a dog (or cat) of the week, perhaps you could show a dog (or cat) that needs to be adapted from one of the organizations in town. I'm sure they would appreciate it!
