How much nicer are the views here without utility poles. I clearly remember one brief time when there was serious consideration of having utilities all be underground in historic parts of the city. Too bad that little window of opportunity was lost.

This photograph of the old post office looks like it was taken not long after the building was completed in 1914. The current post office on Anacapa Street was built in 1936. Do any edhat readers have any suggestions as to the time of day the photo was taken? No cars or wagons are in evidence.

@157P: But isn't that a huge utility pole directly on the corner in front of the building?

200P - my wording error in posting 157P- meant to say that it's nice that there are no utility poles on State Street now, unlike in the picture.

That is the old Post Office, now Santa Barbara Museum of Art, but what is the building behind it? It looks like it's on the Faulkner Gallery site next to the Carnegie Library.

The building behind the post office is "The Anapamu", a lodging house (upstairs) and grocery store (first floor). It was torn down around 1918. The State & A Post Office opened on November 21, 1914 at a cost of $100,000 (the land was donated for $1). Thomas M. Storke, at the time the publisher of the "Daily News & Independent" was the postmaster. Two decades later the town had outgrown that post office and it was Storke who led the campaign to have the new post office built in 1936 at Anacapa and Canon Perdido, replacing one of the city's favorite whorehouses. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art opened in the former post office on June 5, 1941 at exactly 11:43 a.m. Why 11:43? I was told that Buell Hammett, the museum's first president, had the museum's horoscope cast to determine the most auspicious hour! - Neal Graffy

I knew what building it was, but it is a treat to read Neal Graffy's further explanations!
