Heaven forbid we should try to turn that messy oil into something useful. Instead we just plug up the hole. Folks wonder why we have to import our oil instead of using our own natural resources.

Oil imports are expected to drop from 45% of our total oil consumption in 2011 to 34% by the end of the decade based on current production trends. So, yeah. We import oil, but not the majority of it. Funny how that works.

Heaven forbid that it is not known that US exports are expected to continue to grow to rival Saudi Arabia. "The statistics reflect the growing role of the U.S. as a dominant energy producer. Last month, the International Energy Agency said the U.S. could overtake Saudi Arabia and Russia to become the world's largest oil producer by 2020."

We are still importing Billions of dollars worth of crude because of not being able to exploit our vast domestic resources because of the political vagaries of those currently in office. That is a fact.

Am I the only person bothered by the fact that owners decades after the fact are expected to clean up a mess that preceded them, that they were possibly unaware of? Let's pretend YOU bought the property, not knowing it used to be an oil field, and that YOU had to spend the million dollars to clean up past environmental bad practices. Slippery slope.

997P, it is possible to force former owners to pay for it, or even relatives or related companies of the original company/company owner. Of course that is MUCH easier said than done, but there *is* legislation in place to help with that - look up CERCLA for instance.

I don't think its people who simply owned the property, its those who drilled and produced or their successor companies otherwise there is a orphan fund they all chip in to to do clean up administered by a state or federal agency for wells they cannot ascertain ownership of. Thats seems pretty fair to me.

Glad this is being addressed. I will never forget the child that went into a bush in their yard and fell 300 feet down an old well. The boards over the bore had rotted, and his dad turned to see his kid gone. That was a nasty piece of local news.

I walk or jog by there a few times a week. Kudos to ConocoPhillips for doing a very careful and diligent clean-up job. It is obvious that they are carefully following health and safety laws and not taking any shortcuts. Whomever is watching over the contractors, (State, City, independent inspectors) is not letting anything slide, so I'm very pleased that this will be cleaned up, capped, and restored.
