Criminal invasion coming to an island near you. I really hope this opens some eyes about this. I am wondering what is happening on that island? Sounds like there was a base camp set up and they are looking for the rest of them. Wait till these thugs start trying to commandeer a boat that is already out there for a get away. Good reporting VC Star.

Sounds like its time to step up the off shore patrols and adopt a new policy regarding drug smugglers.

Ever heard of "the real McCoy?" It refers to a Prohibition-era rum runner named William McCoy, who was captured when his blockade-runner was engaged by the Coast Guard. McCoy fired on the Coast Guard vessel with a heavy machine gun mounted on his ship, but he was captured and spent 9 months in prison.

The difference between then and now? Well, McCoy was dealing in a mind-altering substance that had been criminalized by religious moralists who wanted to run other people's lives.

Is that really so different from marijuana? Actually, it is. While no one ever died by consuming marijuana, alcohol is medically considered to be a poison that has killed hundreds of thousands of people over the centuries.

350106 - Waaaaahhhhhh.... The old and tired "Alcohol is legal so why isn't the herb that I am addicted to."

Give it up. You know no one ever died from an LSD overdose either but I don't see you complaining about its illegality.

Even if Mary Jane was legal, there would be some other cargo to smuggle. The islands, and other parts of our coast, i.e. the Ranch are probably thought of as easy pickens since they are somewhat remote. Unless our maritime security is beefed up, this problem will only get worse.

0116.... Funny, lots of people die from alcohol overdosing every year.... it's called alcohol poisoning. It is a poison, you know, and ought to be illegal for the same reasons the other drugs you discredit are.

Also more people get killed in one day at the hands of someone under the influence of alcohol than under the influence of LSD or marijuana - EVER. So how you can defend your favorite drug and slag on another that is less harmful is pretty irrational.

I'm no doper but some arguments ought to be kept to oneself.

350141 - Where exactly did you read that I am defending ANY drug??? I think people should do their best to get through their day without ANY drugs. But we all know alcohol addicts have to drink and marijuana addicts have to smoke, and NEITHER can give up their addiction. Oh, both like to SAY that they can quit whenever they want, but they are lying.

They answer to all these problems is not LEGALIZE it, it is STOP USING it.

You're not going to get people to stop using (it has never, ever worked) so why keep harping on that? Trying to get everyone to conform to a substance-free puritanical view of society is about on an ideological par with believing in unicorns and the tooth fairy. Let's be reasonable.

Imagine if we treated alcohol like we treat pot: the consumption of even a single glass of eggnog would be sufficient to call a person an "addict."

If marijuana were legal as it should be this brave coast guard man would still be alive and saving life's. look how ridiculous it all is . A drug war that goes on and on. Legalize it, let people buy it, tax it, control it, and put these fools from across the border once and for all out of business.

Just wanted to make sure here but, you all DO know that it is a medical / scientific FACT that marinjuana is not clinically addictive, right? That is, you cannot become physically dependent on it like with alcohol, tobacco, heroin, xanax, etc.

Ok, just wanted to be sure......

This is not about WEED, REEFER, MARYJANE or GONGA. You have thugs that think they can come up here and run over law enforcement officials and we that are too soft to do anything about it. This is uncharted territory for the smuggling arena of any type, and they are testing it out. From the numbers it would seem successfully. Until a very strong message is sent, It will continue to escalate.

Folks arguing with someone who believes that all drugs are bad (illegal drugs that is...) is like arguing with a born again about the existence of God or _____... They're indoctrinated and no amount of science or reality will deter their belief.

We have created this problem with our puritan and draconian approach to drug use. Regardless of the science, the facts or the realities, people are blinded by their own views which they will fight to uphold regardless of the costs to them or society.

We have created this problem with our lackadaisical approach to drug use. Regardless of the science, the facts or the realities, people are blinded by their obsession to get high which they will fight to uphold regardless of the costs to them or society.

Good. Can these Mexican nationals get the death penalty for this? I am assuming they are Mexican of course. If they are US citizens, throw the book at'em.

Lots of moralistic, right wing, fundamentalist Christians posting here dictating what the sinners should do with their bodies. Very comical actually - and mostly the reason why Romney lost the election.

Marijuana is pretty harmless compared to alcohol. People are way more likely to become dependent on over the counter medication.

350172 - You said it yourself, "psychologically" addicted. That is NOT the same as physical or chemical addiction. FACT.

Yes, you can become mentally dependent on pot, but NOT physically such that you're body goes into confulsions or becomes sick when you try to quit. Sorry, but you're just wrong on that.

350171 - You nailed it on the head! This is about a larger, more problematic issue of smuggling. The whole pot debate (which has gone rampant through a few threads here lately) is moot. We need a stronger presence out there.

Either way, I hope these scumbags get what's coming.

So much vitriol in this thread. A U.S. soldier died. He had a wife, children, parents that will miss him. He was murdered by foreign pirates in U.S. territory. None of it will change drug policy, guaranteed. Remember a soldier and his family in your prayers. That will be energy well-spent.

172, I can prove you wrong. I've gone years smoking pot every day, but if I stop for one day I don't start again. I'm clean now, and I love my PBR's.

I can't believe all this "anti marijuana" blarney; they must have watched the hilarious Reefer Madness. There was an incredible amount of crime associated with prohibition. Heard of Al Capone? Rum running was common in our Santa Barbara waters. Alcohol is the number one drug problem in the U.S. Not everyone who enjoys a drink is addicted; nor is everyone who smokes pot addicted (if you can be!). There are users and abusers.
