Coast guard enforces on the water, but the sheriff enforces on the islands which are county lands. Besides, what is wrong with cooperation and law enforcement supporting one another? Especially considering the USCG officer killed at the islands this weekend.

I look forward to hearing some good news on this one! After the tragedy this weekend, I hope the Sheriff's bring in some justice! Kind of ironic though that the same armed Sheriffs going to get these crooks are the ones that busted all the local dispensaries, thereby encouraging a new wave of illegal weed coming across our border.

The Go Get'em Sheriff-Special WeaponsAndTacticsSmallPlatoon was a little late, as the CG already had the suspects in custody. It was a big show of force, doing no good whatsoever to help intercept a small boat crew, who would have escaped but for the sheriff's brilliant deployment maneuver? Never mind the CG, who would have lost the panga boat if not for the brilliant sheriff. Right? The Sheriff is brilliant tho at getting the Go Get'em crowd fired up. Mission Accomplished. Helicopter launched. Big marijuana boat captured. Ya-hoo. And now we'll cut back on your grandmas health care to pay for it. And spend a million to prosecute, incarcerate and obliterate whilst we tell said grandma we can't afford your healthcare dear sweetie. We're real good at that aren't we.

349805 Actually you and the millions of others who use what is considered illegal narcotics under Federal Law did contribute to the deaths, its just like buying a Blood Diamond you contribute to the market which causes this. I think the war on drugs is stupid and we should just legalize all of it but just because you don't agree with Federal Law does not absolve you. It's obviously more important to you to get "high" every now and then, than to think about the cycle of violence you contribute to as a end consumer creating supply. Many of the same people who liked to chant act locally, think globally do not want to admit their complicity in the drug trade which is not really a surprise.

I don't think that's really fair, there's plenty of marijuana grown within the states that has nothing to do with Mexican cartels or contributing to gang warfare. 853P -805 here. I don't see in your argument how you logically connect my smoking of LOCALLY grown pot (trust me, it's grown in SB) to the deaths caused by drug cartels. Yes, there is a demand fueled by billions of people worldwide for illegal substances. Yes, countless acts of violence and murder are a result of this demand by way of drug cartels, smuggling, and more. But NO, me smoking locally grown weed every now and then does NOT make me an "end consumer" of mexican grown and smuggled pot. That's like saying everyone who likes to wear clothes is responsible for sweat shops. Try again......

I don't think people get what goes on sometimes down in AZ and Texas and why they are fed up. Now we have our first fatality. It seems anyone with a short ingredients list can make their own in one afternoon in the privacy of their own abode. News Flash.... 2 Mexican nationals intercepted 20 miles north of the border by a Coast Guard cutter for the death of Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Terrell Horne. Whatever this alleged BlackHawk full of SO officers armed to the gills was up to it wasn't to fly 250 miles south to interdict, intercept or interrupt the panga's efforts to make it back to their home waters. Methinks the OP's imagination got a little carried away at supposing what was going on in that tiny helicopter flying off from SBA, at regular staging area for any LEO raid.

932, where did you get that it was 20 miles N of the border? Every other report makes it sound like it was in the same area as the incident. While I'm for legalizing weed, I'm not clear how the "end the drug war" crowd speaks to legalizing coke, meth, heroin, and so on. So if we just legalize weed, won't we just see pangas of those other things? Are people really advocating legalizing everything and do they really think that would ever in a million years pass into law in this country? If so, put down the bong!

While the death of any human being is always to be regretted and deplored the cause of this death, and more among non-police, is directly related to drug laws which ignore the right of individuals to control their own bodies. Drug laws were instituted as a means of asserting control over Americans and to benefit the corporations then extending their business strategies into new sales areas. Prohibition was funded by Rockefeller to displace alcohol which was in competition with gasoline as a fuel for automobiles. Marijuana was outlawed to benefit Hearst, who had vast stands of trees which he wanted to sell for pulp into the paper industry. Industrial hemp was competition. California has let the FED's know we want legalized pot. While I've never used pot myself I am well aware many view it as both a medical necessity and as a recreational resource. I don't use it. But that is my choice. Others should be free to chose for themselves. The cost of enforcement is enormous, feeding occasional users into the prison system, which is now run for profit as well. Industrial hemp is a green product. No one can get 'high' on it but every material needed to build a house, except glass, can be produced from it as a raw material. Legalizing Industrial hemp could turn around the economy of our state. Now, think about this issue again and google the number of deaths of ordinary citizens, forgotten except by their families, who died during swat raids or arrests related to marijuana.

Turns out 932 was right about the capture. From CNN, after the incident. The panga boat fled. Around 5 a.m. Sunday, about four hours after the initial crash, the panga was located about 20 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the criminal complaint. Coast Guard officers pulled up and ordered the boat's occupants, at gunpoint, to exit the boat. They refused to comply, and the panga raced away. It then stalled, refused further orders, and sped away again, the complaint said. In the third try, a Coast Guard officer pepper-sprayed both men on the panga. That boat's driver was detained after a struggle with Coast Guard officers, while his passenger was "detained without incident," the criminal complaint said. The suspects had entered the United States "illegally from Mexico," according to the document. Meija-Leyva told investigators "he was taking gasoline to some lost friends north of Los Angeles," and Beltran-Higuera said he'd been offered $3,000 to transport gas to a waiting panga boat off the U.S. coast.
