Sounds like putting up a fence like the one on the bridge might not be a bad idea afterall.

Either way, what a terrible and sad thing to happen to the young man and his family.

There are trails all along the cliff edge. Drunken revelers often try to traverse them.

Very very sad. Way too young to die in a stupid accident like that. Condolences to his family.

Another sad event in I.V. UCSB and Isla Vista seem to garner a lot more unfortunate publicity than most schools; wish that were not the case.

I have no intention of being callous, but wanted to say, generally, but 118P's post led me to think this, that any local news source would carry these stories in any town or city. True that UCSB carries the "party school" label, but I went there and I think it's silly. It's all what you put into your education; it's individual choice (I probably would not have attended if I had to live in IV; I grew up in SB, lived in SB during college & commuted to school by bus). Every town that suffers horrible college situations has to deal with this, i.e., hazing, fraternity issues, alcohol poisonings/deaths, shootings, etc., that reach the national media level. It's there too, in the local media, and I'm sure the locals grieve about it as we do.

COMMENT 341126 helpful negative off topic

Exactly, 062P. For as much as a lot of commenters on Edhat want to harp on about personal responsibility and all of that, someone unfamiliar with the area would think that UCSB students were forced to party themselves to death at gunpoint or something...

When is Ucsb going to stop these type of things from happening in IV. This is a tragedy and there are many more just like this. Chancellor Yang has to do something. It totally tarnishes the reputation of the students here. Some that are working very hard. It's just disgusting...they definitely turn a blind eye.

Please, 1053 and all you "fence" pushing people, please stop trying to put a fence up every time someone falls or jumps from a high place. I and many others like me, do not want a damn fence around every beautiful view in the world. Stop it already.

228 You are a mother of a student and one assumes this poor boy also has a mother. Rather than worry about what you perceive to be your child receiving collateral damage from the university's reputation, and expecting Dr. Yang to be responsible for the individual control of thousands of students, perhaps one should instead show some empathy with the mother ?

How this boy's tragic death could any way "tarnish" this large grieving community is beyond one's understanding.

I am grieveing this senseless death. My empathy goes far beyond this boys family. What Iam saying is that the drug, partying out of control ways and culture that is widely accepted in IV has to end. That's where these problems start. I would not be commenting here if I did not feel a great sadness for this young boy and his mother. But yes like I said before get your **** together Yang. And by the way I did get a Ucsb alert at 3 am stating yet another sexual assault in IV at party! Tragic.....

To dirty harry: how would putting a 4 ft high fence across dangerous cliffs spoil your view? Yes, jumpers could climb it, but it would help keep people from falling, esp if they are under the influence.

COMMENT 341326 helpful negative off topic

2012-11-10 11:54 AM

I am so sorry for the parents of this young man and all of the others that have fallen after partying. School should be about your future, making friends and memories. For some groups it has become about partying to the excess.

If safety of the bluffs is #1, then Del Playa needs some changing.

#3 buy up all those beach front rentals, tear them down return it to park space

#2 Enforce local ordinances on drinking and partying in Isla Vista and keep the "new bluff top park" no alcohol and patrolled.

AND

#1 Work with the UCSB and SBCC students to change from the party to excess attitude to party with in reason. Watch for each other and look for signs of people who can not care for themselves and take responsibility.

How tragic. If I were his mother, don't know how I'd ever recover. Yes, my vote is to put a 4 foot fence up around the areas where the falls happen. Save some lives, why not! People still drink alcohol, then go out to enjoy to ocean. Young people are especially at risk. Have common sense and be proactive. Condolences to the family and friends of this young man.

COMMENT 341334P helpful negative off topic

DIRTYHARRY has it right. The partiers would only see the fence as a challenge. It's not the solution, to fence off every place that has a long drop. Better to try and educate the students about the "pitfalls" (har) of drinking and partying too hard.

My condolences go out to his family, friends and other loved ones. I am sure they didn't raise him up this far and expect his life to be cut short in such a tragic and senseless way.
My heart goes out to them.

And now for something controversial. UCSB has some complicity in this and other tragedies in IV. The school keeps bringing in more and more students, increasing the overcrowding in IV, which is already the most densely populated area west of the Mississippi. If UCSB cared about the community of IV instead of padding the pockets of the staff and regents, then IV would be a safer place to live--for everyone.

"Assume" is superfluous. A waste of time in a dialogue it just draws attention to the fact that one has no control or access to the facts in a situation.

All of you fence-pushers, you helicopter parents/citizens, you anti-natural selection folks - You are all victims of media bias. These accidents are NOT becoming more frequent. The info is simply more available to you, so you THINK it is.

Put down the newspaper/internet for two weeks and see just how many local deaths you actually hear of. Then check edhat and read how many terribly things you NEVER WOULD HAVE HEARD OF. Point proven.

You want the deaths from falling to stop!?! We have a tool at our collective disposal. It's called Eminent Domain. The houses that line that cliff were mostly built with large yards (25 yards+) in the back. The yards have, and will continue to, erode into the encroaching coastline. Put it to your local government that public welfare justifies condemning these properties, tear them down and put up a barrier worthy of even a drunkards attention. Make it illegal to approach the cliffs beyond the barrier with EXPULSION FROM UCSB in the balance! That will minimize the tragedies of students falling from the cliffs to the greatest extent possible. That or force those owners, who have been renting those houses at outrageous rates to students for decades, to put up glass walled barriers as a specifically zoned requirement for those properties.

That being said, I believe in natural selection. A rich daddy and his lawyer can't buy your way out of this kind of stupidity. I partied A LOT in Isla Vista in my youth, and in my compromised state, I had a lot of stuff done to me that I had to suffer the humiliation of living it down. Eventually, I learned. Unfortunately, sometimes one doesn't take learn the lesson in time. Yea, it's tragic, ... but c'mon, get real!

It is unfortunate that we have a permissive "anything goes" society where parents do not teach their children the difference between right and wrong. Want some weed, no problem. Want some booze, no problem. Want some other drugs, that is fine. Well don't complain when kids grow up and go to college and get hurt or worse.

All excellent suggestions, 326. I also don't want to appear callous, but this doesn't surprise me. It's just one more of what we hear all too frequently about IV cliffs..

I visited Minneapolis/St. Paul a few years ago. The University there was trying to crack down on student drinking by publishing a list of the "worst" party houses in the area. How did the students react? They competed to get ON the list by throwing ever bigger and wilder parties! Utterly predictable. The law of unintended consequences. Mourn the young man, but don't look to this as a catalyst for change.

I have also felt very frustrated with Chancellor Yang re: what seems to be tacit approval of what goes on in IV. But in reality, he has little control of what happens off-campus. He can tighten up on UCSB students who break the law, but falling off a cliff isn't a crime. Unlike this boy, a lot of the 20 something's ( and younger) in IV aren't UCSB students and are drawn there like a magnet. IMHO, any parent from anywhere other than SB that sends their kid to SBCC and then lets them live in IV is a fool. People in IV from out of the area are the worst. Don't know what Yang can do about that. Maybe the public needs to protest!

Parents need to educate their kids more effectively that alcohol is deadly and addictive. This is not an issue with IV or ucsb... CA really needs to legalize marijuana. I bet you that not 1 fall out in IV was a result of marijuana. I hate alcohol!

COMMENT 341589 helpful negative off topic

2012-11-11 07:23 AM

Ban alcohol IV. Less access to alcohol should translate to less unsocial behavior. Since personal responsibility for one's self and others seems to be waning, removing the cause of drunken behavior seems obvious. It is a clear and present danger, with high social, emotional and intellectual costs.

Does the ABC have any sway here? There was a big to do when they changed the IV liquor laws'to be more permissive back in the early 80's.

There is nothing funny about the drunk. He is loud, ugly, disgusting and just plain messy. Think of our police. Imagine those poor guys dealing with this rubber legged human, putting him into the car and praying he won't throw up over the back seat. Multiply this a dozen times a shift and worse on holidays and you wonder how they they stand it.

I see a lot of denial here -- the first step in grieving -- in the comments about this or that should be done or its the fault of this person or that person. The reality is that it was a tragic accident that stands by itself, and we should mourn for David and send condolences to his family and friends, and not muddy his death with all these other agendas.
