What's the deal on the pianos? Who? Why? It's fun. and it's not that easy to steal a piano.

Pianos on State 2012 Public Art and Spontaneous Music on Full Display in Annual Unleashing of Instruments NOVEMBER 2, 2012 SANTA BARBARA, CA — The tinkling started on Thursday afternoon and will continue for nearly two weeks, as the Pianos on State were officially unleashed throughout downtown Santa Barbara on November 1 as part of the monthly First Thursday art event. The artistically decorated pianos will remain on the streets and open to playing by the public each day from morning to night until November 12. A yearly public art and spontaneous music project that coincides with the fourth annual music conference and festival known as New Noise Santa Barbara, Pianos on State is a joint project of New Noise, Notes for Notes, the Santa Barbara Bowl, the Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative, the Santa Barbara Arts Commission, the Santa Barbara Education Foundation, the Creative Collaboration Network, and the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization.

Doing the Art Walk last night, and saw/heard a young couple playing one on the grass at the Lobero. Our smiles nearly matched theirs; it was a simple joy but helped make our evening enjoyable. Thanks.

We were in Salt Lake City when a similar project was happening downtown. We must have played 6 or 7 pianos, and listened to others play as well. Fun! Made everyone happy.

I hope no one dares to attempt a chromatic scale. People don't like chromatic things here - especially a certain gate it seems. Rock on, pianos! And Gates! ART!

Hello art/music/state street piano lovers! I am the artist who painted this particular piano, my name is Jami Joelle Nielsen. This project was challenging and oh so much fun! The image on the front panel of the piano is an octopus, as an astute commenter pointed out. If you haven't yet, go out and play at one of the many fantastic Pianos On State. Thank you for all the positive feedback!
