Does squid have a reasonable market value ? It doesn't seem so popular as a food item..

Calamari is getting more popular at local restaurants and it is one of the best baits for ocean fishing. When you see several boats at night lit up with powerful lights...those are the squid boats. They set a weight limit for the amount caught per year, once that quota is met... that is it for the season.

Sharks have and will always be out there. Its where they are. Always be aware ocean sports are fun but all have a bit of danger. Be aware of your surroundings have fun and keep it safe.

Fresh squid is amazing. Not like the junk you get when you order the fried calamari in restaurants. Most all of it gets processed before it ever gets to market. Ask any local Italian. Unfortunately they off load in Ventura so you don't find in in the local markets. I grew up eating and get it when we can from the fishing boats or from Ventura when they unload. Really, fresh vs processed is like the difference between fish sticks at the school cafeteria and fresh salmon.

The article says these are the Humboldt Squid - not your usual calamari. My buddy caught some of these a few years ago thinking he'd be set for months with fresh (and frozen) calamari but they ended up being tough and pretty bad tasting. Either way, they're still pretty amazing creatures to have around!

Humboldt Squid are (or can be) delicious! Squid in general is tough if not cooked right. Nice thing about Humboldts is they get HUGE - up to 100lb! Not your normal fish bait/calamari type. I think there's also been small squid running as the light boats have been out off of El Cap area for about a month. I don't think they are targeting Humboldt.

257: Fish eat squid. More squid = more White Sea Bass = more Sea Lions = more Great White Sharks.

Unwarranted term sharks "lurking." They don't want you as prey, if it keeps you out of the lineup great. I would rather surf in shark infested waters than walk around some parts of town at night.
