If you would like to avoid gridlock, please do the following: - Take a deep breath and repeat to yourself, "I'll get to where I'm going, it just might take more time than I had planned". - Pay attention to the signal lights and obey them. - DO NOT BLOCK INTERSECTIONS. This means if the traffic immediately on the other side of the intersection has not moved up enough for you to proceed through the intersection ENTIRELY do NOT get into the intersection. STAY PUT. - DO NOT DODGE AROUND. It may SEEM like that other lane is going faster but studies have shown time and again that changing lanes does NOT improve your forward progress. - DO NOT CUT PEOPLE OFF. When it is time to Zipper Merge, let your fellow traveler into your lane. Lastly: - ALLEYS ARE NOT FREEWAYS. If you do decide to be a douche and cut through commercial parking lots to get to an alley, drive slowly and carefully.

Note about the off-topic thread: Guess what? If you are driving somewhere with a car full of kids, you are carpooling which is one of the solutions the biker listed above. It's nice the single person is riding a bike as opposed to what I did yesterday-drove to Goleta and back by myself!

Usually when you cut someone off, you are gaining about 2-4 car lengths in time, which at freeway speeds is almost 3 seconds. Looking back at the delays it caused to thousands of people far more than 3 seconds a piece and not even including the excess gas used, it really hardly seems worth it. I'm having trouble thinking of any destinations where it would make a huge difference to arrive 30 seconds to a minute earlier, emergency room perhaps...any thoughts? Side note, people were quick to pounce on the bike comment this morning...really... the bike vs. car debate is very old and strange. We're in a fairly small town where the destinations are reasonably close together and bikes and cars will always be on the road, so just share it...there's not point getting worked up about it.

I hope there were witnesses to what happened if someone did cut the guy off, he or she is held responsible and their insurance kicks in. This is SO SAD for the boat owner! ps- why edhat comments get off track and self righteous never ceases to amaze me!

237P for the win. I always think that when the bike riders get so self righteous, but you said it better than I could have. Not everyone has a life that supports riding a bike.

215P.... Great advice. Should I put my infant daughter in the basket over the rear tire? What should I do with my son and his other t -ball players? What about the groceries, including some frozen treats for the kids? Oops! Nearly forgot that I need to pick up the dog, a boxer, from the vet where he spent the day recovering after surgery. I think you can see not only how my day went. So the next time you get on your bike, or board that dirty bus that belches exhaust, thinking you are morally superior to those of us who drive, give yourself a hearty pat on your back for single handedly saving the environment from people like me.

Maybe less people should be on the road at that time of day... good way to get around is bus, bike, walk, carpool, vanpool, etc. If traffic is that bad it's a good opportunity to go to a park and enjoy some fresh air, let it clear up. Instead people add to the problem by trying to drive in the mess and they complain. Jeeeesh

It was a bloody nightmare to go anywhere here this afternoon. Many sat in traffic with the vehicles running burning up gas and exhaust fumes everywhere. Heaven help us in a real disaster. A little more accurate coverage on the radio, or even better more info from the CHP would have been nice too.

It took me about 45 min to get from State and Alamar to Hollister and Patterson. Knew there had to be something going on on the 101.

Having just the 101 corridor in a real emergency is a huge issue and they know it but what can be done? 154 is basically useless in a pinch and the surface streets clog faster then arteries on butter. I just hope a Sandy type event never happens here but in reality it is not if but when now.

As I passed the accident around 4pm on the southbound, they were using a crane to get the boat out of there or at least up-righted I think. I could see the name of the boat and recognized it as the one whose use was frequently donated to our local outrigger club for practicing water changes a few years back. They were super nice to let us use it and I hope everyone's okay. As for the complaint(s) about one little accident tying up the highways -- even though I don't think anyone was injured, this isn't really an everyday accident at all. It's not a little boat. It's not often used just for recreation, either, but is representative of our local high-tech industry. I agree with the poster that said the rare accident is no reason to install more highways in an out of our unique environment here in SB. Let's all just remember that you can be a good defensive driver without being aggressive.

097 backing up at Turnpike going south about an hour ago. But a peek out my window looks like everything is good Southbound now. yeah 073 good for you. I happened to be working - out in the field. Can't really ride a bike all day although it would be great for my health. Thanks for your 2 cents!

And Modoc heading north was backed up from State/Hollister to beyond Las Positas. I'd heard that area was in bad shape if there ever were an emergency and this afternoon's backed up traffic proved that ... and no emergency. Planners planning more development (and city council approving it) take note. (101 northbound was backed up beyond Milpas.)

Traffic is backed up beyond Castillo. Just tried to get out to the county education building. Got off 101, onto State. Backed up. Tried Foothill. Crawling. First thing I wondered was what if this was tsunami or mandatory evacuation? We'd be toast!

Don't bother cutting through Hope Ranch, they are ripping out the road and resurfacing it, so there are delays due to the construction and dirt bottom road right now.

Seriously, avoid the freeway... surrounding streets getting gummed up too. @028. agree....in a real emergency, you have to wonder about all these people getting out of here, we just don't have the roads for it.
