@338248P It is those who denigrate scientists who are not objective. The supposed political biases of scientists are creations of these unobjective people out of their own ideologies, not facts about scientists.

Thanks 418. Been wanting to do this for years. We were there a few years ago and it was beautiful. Get the rental car and head south to Tulum. It's like living in a Corona beer commercial. The people are great too.

338371 - No. What the Maya foretold, unbeknownst to them, was the exact date in which next Tuesday's Presidential election results will be finalized. This election will be so close that there will be several states doing recounts, and a month and a half later, Romney will be declared President in a controversial Supreme Court ruling on the inability of Hurricane Sandy victims to cast ballots. Romney will set into motion an attack on Iran, which will start a nuclear war. You heard it here first.

Is it possible... that by an "Apocalyptic event" the MAYA meant death and destruction to the EGO and the idea that as humans we are separate from each other? Destroying Mother as Nature thereby destroying ourselves?....or in a Shamanic vision, they for saw the world, as we know it, NOT working and about to implode? A dramatic climatic shift in consciousness needs to happen because we are destroying the very star and earthly home we live on with apathy, war, politics and religion. I look forward to the lecture. See you other inquiring minds there!

Professor Aldana is brilliant. He is a scientist, anthropologist and Professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies. He lectures on MesoAmerica and Maya history, archeology and development. I have learned alot by sitting in on his lectures.

288 - Bad science doesn't hang around, among scientists. You're talking about bad opinions and policy promulgated by politicians and special interest groups, and not scientists working in the subject involved.

I actually will be in the Yucatan on 12/21/12. If the world ends (which it won't) I'll be on a white sand beach with my babe, under a palm tree, drinking a cold Pacifico, staring out at the warm, turquoise waters.

Ahhh but Chuck, there is GOOD science and BAD science. And BAD science starts with the jumping to conclusions. And Shorebird, I am always skeptical (and everyone should be) about a "scientific conclusion" which, in just a few years time, led to a multi-trillion dollar industry. When people try and sell me (on) something because it is "green", I feel like I'm being sold a Beenie Baby. It's waaaaaaay over-priced, fuzzy and cute, but for the most part worthless.

The "process of science" may have a "built-in baloney remover," but not so with most who call themselves scientists. A great many are political animals and hardly objective. Thus what they practice is often skewed by politics and their own beliefs.

130P doesn't understand the process of science. Unlike politics and belief, the process of science has a built-in baloney remover. Blatant baloney, like this doomsday nonsense, gets removed quickly. The more minute and obscure the baloney, like the difference between Newtonian and Einsteinian gravity, the more motivation to remove it. Shorebird has it right.

People that believe in 12/21/12 apocalyptic theories are the same people that spend good money on books that teach you strategies on how to win the lotto. Even with a crowbar you couldn't shove a logical thought into their heads.

If you want to see this debunked, just google "information is beautiful 2012" The first result is a lovely infographic that very clearly highlights problems with this interpretation, the total lack of cultural context and ignorant blurring of mesoamerican cultures by hippies and con-artists.

Man talk about haters!! I met Gerardo when he first got to UCSB, he showed how by documenting the way an obsidian point was chipped, you could follow a specific artisan through mesoamerica, kind of like a fingerprint, he made his class learn how to make the points out of glass to prove everyone made them different. Very smart guy as was pointed out, and fun to listen to. If you have time and if its only 10 bucks well worth it!
