897 is correct, Jupiter was above the moon in the west this morning. With your outstretched hand, it should have looked about 3 or 4 finger widths above the moon (~5 degrees). You can download the free program "Stellarium" to view a simulation of the sky from any location in the world on your PC. You can even zoom in on objects (e.g on Jupiter to see the moons). Lots of other nice features like fast-forward or reverse playback, displaying of names of stars/planets/constellations, etc.

That probably isn't Venus. The moon was full, and so was on it's way to setting when you were leaving "in the morning" for work. The moon is currently on the opposite side of the sky from the sun, and Venus is always going to be either just ahead of or just behind the sun. It was more than likely Jupiter. That's been appearing in the Eastern sky lately a few hours after sunset.

I get a ring something like that, but only with my right eye, without glasses. Haven't tried it with my glasses on yet. A simple matter of optics, I guess.
