Between this and the behavior of the UC Davis players after the game (taunting the crowd), I'm never taking my kid to a UCSB soccer game again.

Sad that McGlynn is being prosecuted, but not unexpected if the arresting UC Police officer recommended it. The sad part is still Tim Vom Steeg getting away with only one game off. I'd assume he's salaried and only loses 1/365 of his salary. McGlynn was there in 2010 when his teammates went after the ref after the game at CAL. Now, his final year, he does what his coach promotes. Go after the ref! It couldn't be OUR conduct that made us lose?!?! Vom Steeg has trained these players this way and sportsmanship doesn't rank in his top 10. I hope all that weren't't there watch the video from immediately after the goal when TVS goes after the ref and needs to be restrained.

So for all the punishment is to harsh crowd if I run up behind you and knock you to the ground in a angry way that would be okay and I should not be arrested? You all need to look in the mirror you are probably the parents who get in brawls at little league games.

How is it that the DA can file charges against this guy 3 days after the incident occurred, but Karen Flores, who embezzled somewhere between $500k - $1million from the SBPD remains out on bail over a year after she was arrested? Why hasn't Flores gone to trial? Why hasn't Flores started paying restitution for the money she stole from all of US?

I am so sorry I ever voted for Joyce DUDley.

Waste of money. This is a perfect example of government when it's bored.

Only in SB can an officer beat the snot out of a suspect and get a promotion. But if someone pushes someone they get charged. Wow that's really fair. This DA is a wacko.. I wish Josh Lynn had won.

Does the soccer player deserve the punishment? Absolutely. Is it necessary to get the DA involved? Absolutely not.

Hooligan. Hooligans need punishment, I'm not sure about legally, but they do need punishment. It was a cheap shot.

Criminal charges for shoving? Ok, but how about criminal charges against a cop on steroids that beats the crap out of a person he's arresting? Or are there two standards of justice in this county?

Regardless of whether this punk gets charged, all I have to say is what a COWARD! I watched the video and he comes up from behind and pushes the unsuspecting ref to the ground. Act like a man and at least confront him face to face!

Glad he's off the team and VERY glad I didn't take my son to this game.

What a sissy!

this is a joke right? Charges? Seems right up there with the attention grabbing media loving Snedden and his Michael Jackson witch hunt...

No need for any criminal charges here at all... it was minor in all respects. We have police officers who beat innocent people, we have hundreds of gang members acting with impunity, we have so many more important issues that need addressing by the DA and they spend their time and efforts chasing the limelight?

If the Ref had been actually hurt, if he had been beating with more than a single push - maybe. But nothing I've read or seen about this incident makes it a criminal act... What a farce

That's it? I was expecting something more after all the hooplah they've created over this. Yes the kid shouldn't have done that, he's off the team and should be reprimanded further through UCSB. But come on, it's a shove, not a blow to the face. They're making it seem like this kid threatened his life.

What a poor example for all the children I can imagine were at the game.

I think it is assault, I'd charge him, glad he got kicked off the team. His behavior is inexcusable.

He is an adult and he assaulted another man. He should pay the consequences.

Athletes need to get the message that while they may have an exceptional skill at kicking a ball or riding a bike or whatever, the real impact they make on society is as a role model. Violence has no place in sport.

Wow, Mr. Cheap Shot. Please put this guy in jail for atleast 2 weeks. If you are going to push someone, man up and atleast let them have an opportunity to react.

If a player is going to act like a soccer hooligan he needs to be treated as such. The kind of violence notable in big games is bad enough in the stands but has no place on the field of sporting competition. This action should be a blemish on his record for a long time.... and a serious failure of his head coach to properly train and coach his players. This brings shame on the House of Gaucho.

To those blaming the ref or condoning Glynn's behaviour.... poor impulse control is a mark of immaturity - grow up already.

337342 - It was NOT in the heat of the game. The game was OVER. Furthermore, McGlynn wasn't even PLAYING, as he had received a red card from that official earlier.

Put this in perspective. Imagine ANY pro sports athlete who, after a game, hunts down an official and violently shoves them from BEHIND, hard enough that they get thrown to the ground. In addition to the fines and suspension, I'm sure they would be facing criminal charges as well.

I sure hope this never goes to trial.

I, for one, applaud the application of criminal law in this instance.

We have, as a country, put sports on a pedestal and treated athletes as if they are gods. As a result, we get folks like Michael Vick, Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson, Mike Tyson and OJ Simpson.

As to the comment "deport him", A B S O L U T E L Y.

On the team bio, he stated that he "prays before every game" and yet this is how he behaves?

Yeah, ship his skinny butt back to Ireland.

Come on FLICKA. Just like the outcome of a ballgame isn't a life or death situation, this minor "assault" isn't a life or death situation. It's nowhere even near it - amounted to a schoolyard push. It's opinions like this that are flushing our society down the toilet right into a police state. Big Brother, here we come!

Better refereeing? Don't charge the guy? Come on!!! Assualt is violence, doesn't matter if you agree w/the referee or not, no excuse for this. Of course he should be charged, will send a message about sportsmanship to other "game players", that's all these sports are, GAMES. The outcome of a ballgame isn't a life or death situation.

Yes, she had a choice! This is a ridiculous waste of tax dollars over an unfortunate and stupid incident. McGlynn has certainly learned his lesson, as have the rest of the team and he has been punished.

COMMENT 337666P helpful negative off topic

Whether it happened on the field or off it was assault, and the referee was not a competitor. You add to that it has been picked up by some national publications including MSNBC.com, USA Today and Businessweek don't see how she had a choice.

Sometimes I wish the DA would show some sportsmanship with our tax dollars. Not everything needs a criminal filing-amazingly somethings actually work out themselves. Life is like that.

COMMENT 337364P helpful negative off topic

Nobody seems to know what sportsmanship means any more. The new version is "win at any cost, by any means". If he can't control his temper, he should face the consequences.

Wow, yeah that's over the top! He already got kicked off the team, that's the right consequence, there shouldn't have to be legal charges too, these sports carry a lot of pressure with them at the college level.
