Congrats to the Publisher of the Independent who pushed this issue as it was one of her relatives, used her ink and influence to push this through. As for "the people" comment the airport administration was public in saying the majority of responses they got were not in favor of this. The Indy however did endorse several members of the council and used to employ Cathy Murillo, so the publishers influence is greater than the public who did weigh in on it with the council.

That's right, the airport name remains the same, just the terminal is being named. To help tired travelers, most large airports try to keep their terminal names simple (Terminal 1, 2, 3, Terminal A, B, C, etc.). Since SBA is such a small airport, I suppose it doesn't matter what we call our terminal. But if we had a large airport with many terminals, it wouldn't be wise to give them proper names. That said, I think it would be funny if we named our terminal "Oxnard".

That decision was a travesty. Named the airport terminal after someone who did something so shameful that the state legislature passed a law making sure that no one could pull that slight of hand ever again. Makes one really proud of Santa Barbara's bought and paid for city council.

I called my 80-something-year-old friend who used to be very involved in City Council dealings/local politics. My friend said s/he watched the meeting on t.v. S/he then pronounced to me, "You could tell it was a cooked up deal." My friend informed me that Erin Graffy de Garcia and Marianne Partridge (Independent) both gave long, long impassioned pleas before the Council, asking that the Terminal be named after Rickard. I was surprised to hear that these women were in favor of this deal. I have talked with them both, socially and otherwise, over the yearsm and they appear to be intelligent women. What gives?

368P: What was that? At the time Rickard was judge, a political appointment, he was not viewed as a model of judicial impartiality and ethics. And 376P, they said they don't want a large plaque. It did most certainly look like a pre-cooked decision, minds already made up before the meeting.

402: love it; Terminal Gerry Mander would have been a good name! As for the running rampant: It's just Santa Barbara giving the finger to Goleta because Goleta will have the area Target at which Santa Barbarans will shop - and contribute sales tax money, joining other tax streams from the CostCo marketplace, while SB has the homeless and other transients, aka tourists.

I wrote an e-mail to Karen Ramsdell, the Airport Director, expressing my opinion that the terminal should not be re-named. She received a total of 79 letters/e-mails, most expressing the same opinion. These she presented to the City Council who, apparently, were not terribly interested in the opinion of the public whom they "serve". I must admit that it would have been desirable if more people had gone to the trouble to forward their thoughts, though I am not sure it would have made any difference.

I'm saddened that we didn't name the new air terminal after Dennis and Evie Quaid. They made a clean getaway from Santa Barbara, didn't they? The terminal could have been called "Quazy Quaids." Imagine the mirth we'd have telling folks we're flying into the "double Q", instead of SBA. (I know, I know, the FAA requires three letter symbols for each airport, but I can dream, can't I?) Oh, the reknown QQ would have garnered!

The original SBA terminal was named the Earle Ovington Terminal (and still is). Does anyone ever refer to it as that? Probably not. The name "Rickard Terminal" will fade into obscurity as did the Ovington Terminal and the airport will continue to be Santa Barbara Airport. It really is a non-issue.
