Hopefully, the DA feels some shame for what she put the victim and the victim's family through. There can be grey areas in the law and in life. Only most simplistic minds think only in black and white.

Ok I'm sure it went to court cause it was a DA that didn't have any other cases... $500 fine implies guilt and great lawyers.

Mandatory reporting is simply that - MANDATORY. They disregarded a law they fully knew they were required to comply with. I support this conviction, even as much as I sympathize with the two administrators. Even if they had been in LOWER positions, the mandate would have applied. It's particularly egregious for a the upper level management of the school to think it is ok to "protect" ANYONE involved, be it the girl or the two young men or the church or the school. A fine simply helps to cover SOME of the costs of this case - community service would be a better sentence, I feel. But it was important to make a point here to all mandated reporters and to the community.

They should have spent the weekend in jail. They got off easy.

-298 Law is black and white. You either broke the law or you didn't. Simplistic minds think that they can fudge the law.

I agree that the teachers should have reported these rapes, and so now they have to face up to that "negligence". While i can see there's something positive about "sheltering" the women, nowhere have I seen the men mentioned nor their punishment -- if any.

If we were to prosecute every person for failing to report alleged sexual assaults to authorities then we would have to arrest every living Catholic church official. Time to extradite the Pope.

If anyone thinks the two were trying to protect the girl, they're nuts. They were protecting the school and church. What happened to the boys?

I agree, Flicka, that's what my mind and assumptions jump to. The young man is Shane Villalpando. The other "boy" is under 18. http://www.ksby.com/news/santa-maria-teen-pleads-no-contest-in-sexual-assault-case/
