Maybe they are counting the revenues they get from towing the cars of unlicensed/uninsured drivers to come up with the cost savings. At the last DUI checkpoint they only got 3 drunk drivers and issued 55 citations so the revenue enhancing part of their work is very attractive to them. I'm very glad that the Office of Traffic Safety has all of the extra money to give out to the sheriff's department as that means I don't have to vote for prop 30 anymore- they must not need it.

461 - what happened to you is very unusual - if you have a sober licensed driver with you, the officer will usually let that person drive and you are given a ticket. If they see you driving again then they will impound the car. The DUI stats are not bloated - they are sad proof of people's irresponsibility. I'm an emergency service worker - I have been on the scene of many accidents this year where alcohol was involved (the driver was drunk). I support whatever law enforcement has to do to try and keep things in check.

Just another racket. Where does all the money go. I paid over $750 dollars for forgetting to renew my license on time although I have a perfect driving record. My licensed girlfriend sat in the front seat and could have taken over, but Officer Bacon said how do I know you won't pull over in a block and jump back in the driver seat... The cops, the city, and those tow truck companies should be ashamed! Sad what is going on theses days.

393, I think you are right and this is a bloated statistic - wouldn't be surprised if they are calculating it hypothetically as if every driver they catch would have caused a huge accident. Take it with a grain of salt, if it seems too good to be true something's proooobably up.

Where are they getting that $6 saved for $1 spent stat? they know they can catch many more impaired drivers with saturation patrols. Frequently, checkpoints yield no DUI arrests. Usually it's about 2 dui arrests out of 800 or more vehicles screened. Each checkpoint involves a minimum of 5 cops; usually more. That's a minimum of 5 DUI arrests that could have been made if they weren't doing busy work at a checkpoint. I'm guessing that they are attributing the downward trend in alcohol related accidents entirely to their press releases about checkpoints. Clearly there are other factors at play: Non-law enforcement sources of information about the risks presented by DUI, saturation patrols, safer cars, ignition interlock (maybe), better and/ or more widely used public transportation, etc. Lies, damn lies and statistics.

Uninsured and in an accident? I believe the car should be impounded on the spot. And if the driver doesn't pay, sold to help cover the cost of repairs.

Excellent! Now if they can seriously do something about the un-licensed/un-insured..........
