@569 ... do you know if the Pony rides were located at the Santa Barbara & Cabrillo location in the 60's?

The Pony rides were on the Eastern corner of Santa Barbara and Cabrillo. Every Saturday I took my oldest son (from ages 4-7) for a pony ride there. Then we would go to the old Moby Dick's restaurant out on the wharf, sit at the counter and have breakfast. He always had French Toast. He is now a deputy Sheriff here and has been one for 24 years. The popcorn man operated out of a "woody" he parked at the foot of the wharf and sold his goodies to anyone coming and going on foot either onto or off of the pier or who were walking along Cabrillo Blvd. Castillo and Cabrillo was Pershing Park with stables and a green wood fenced in area and served as a site for rodeos, carnivals and horse shows before Earl Warren was built. The old pound was on Santa Barbara Street just South of the Railroad crossing.

Had no idea the pony ride place was there in the 40's! I'll have to ask my elderly relatives about them. They've told me so many stories about growing up in SB during WW2. The one story I remember most is how they had to carry ID cards stating they were of Chinese rather than Japanese decent to stay out of trouble. I think they went to Lincoln School, which isn't around anymore.

There was at least one article done by the SB News Press when the ants started appearing. Check the archives. You might check with the historical museum on De La Guerra.

The pony rides were at Castillo & Cabrillo in the '40's, and sometime later moved to upper State Street near Calle Laureles, where the CVS parking lot is now.

Neal, by "proper credit" I hope you don't mean "photo credit". Publishing a book that you expect people to buy I would hope you are offering "bank credit" or in other words payment for photos.

I got a preview of Neal's book when the Westerners went to the Alisal Ranch; it is wonderful!! Definately need to have a booksigning at Chaucers. When I was little (1940s) we went to pony rides on the corner of Castillo and Cabrillo, where the El Patio Hotel is now. Took my kids to Don and Shirley's, well cared for ponies.

Neal, thanks for setting me straight on the years for the Pony Rides. I have a question: where was the "Pound" (as we always called it) in relation to the Pony Rides? Wasn't the Pound closer to the beach, but on SB St. as well? Will it be in your book? When did the Pound move out to Goleta? Thanks. And @ 231: Wow. I cannot believe no one ever told me about "Damn Right I Grew Up in Santa Barbara!" I went on Fbook to have a look and first face I saw was someone I know fairly well (he's one of my 30 Fbook friends!). And yet, if not for your comment, I would still be clueless about that page. THANK YOU.

Can EdHat tell you the email address of whoever submitted the pony photo? Probably not, I'm sure you thought of that. Good luck with your book! Is the ant not on the Granada anymore? I remember it but never took a pic, darnit.

May I ask when and where did the Pony Rides begin in SB? I have fuzzy memories of my first ride there. Somewhere there is a photo of me donning a cowboy hat at the riding place.

I remember being so sad when the Pony rides closed down. I cut the article from the news paper about it and saved it for a long time. I have good memories there...

Dear NY Minute. The Pony Rides closed in 1977. The person who posted the photos that included the Pony Rides photo said they were taken in 1975. The building in the photo with the bracing on the upper deck was built by John(?) Wright before 1975. @emuwren1 - The ponies were treated very well. They were the bread and butter for the family that ran the pony rides so they took darn good care of them. @337231 The photo was taken from edhat and posted on Damn Right I Grew Up in Santa Barbara (Facebook). - Neal

No ant pictures,, but someone might have one with photos of Fiesta parade. Proctor & Ward did their parade commentary from a platform set up in front of the Granada, and the parade would invite a wide shot down State..,

Hold on just a N.Y. minute! The pony rides weren't still there in 1975! Are you sure about that? My friend, looking over my shoulder, says he recognizes the building to the right. He says he noticed that odd bracing of the upper deck, having seen it before. And, yes, that is a modern building. Still. Really? The Pony Rides were there in '75? I can't believe it. The clothing on the people looks more vintage than that.
