That's messed up. While it was the kid's stupid decision, I'm willing to bet it would NOT have happened if that Coach didn't get pumped up first. He is supposed to be a role model for these players, not amp them up enough that they follow in their coaches' footsteps and make stupid decisions.

Whiny crybabies. You got pushed, suck it up and act like a man. I guess it's not just the players who flail around acting like foppish dandies the second they get touched. Getting a little grass on the seat of your shorts is not a police matter...

Vom Steeg should be done for the season as well. His actions are a complete embarrassment to the university. When will the university realize the program will improve without him? Anyone know why Dom Sarle quit the team earlier this year? This team needs a cleaning and it should start at the top.

I support this decision. The coach was out of line, but the player was completely in the wrong. Adults need to act in a civil manner or accept the consequences.

Vom Steeg either has no control over his team or he actively encourages this kind of behavior. Fire him.

Vom Steeg has brought that team from nothing, to a worldwide powerhouse. He has brought visibility both to soccer and to UCSB. Sure, he is a hot head. He was in the wrong. But you take the good with the bad. A couple bad incidents do not erase the incredible things he has done with his program.

Proactive by UCSB might not be enough and couldn't there be other sanctions coming from NCAA over this?

084 and 127. UCSB is not a professional soccer team. It is, first and foremost, a University for higher learning. Vom Steeg sets the tone for his team and he needs to go. UCSB can function just fine without him. It has an excellent hard won scholastic reputation and does not need that kind of embarrassment. There really is no excuse for keeping him. The program adds nothing to the school scholastically or financially.

191P: Try watching a college football game some time. The behavior of those coaches toward the officials is no worse than that of Vom Steeg. And ostensibly, ALL colleges are first and foremost academic universities. Did you ever watch Bobby Knight in action?? Because of the success of his program and the recognition he brought to Indiana, he was reprimanded, suspended .. and retained. Most coaches have a highly competitive personality. This is one factor that makes many of them successful. Is it a fine example of sportsmanship? No. But when a coach is successful and brings recognition to his program, which Vom Steeg has, it is tolerated as part of college sports. Suspend him. Reprimand him. But don't fire him.

Vom Steeg has been a consistent winner; however, his players have been out of control too many times. As a former Gaucho athlete cannot support his actions and attitudes. The soccer program, for all its success and acclaim, is headed over a cliff under Vom Steeg's leadership.Time to say thank you very much for your contributions and part company.

Vom Steeg coaches college age men. Not five year olds. Many of his players are international athletes. They can handle it.

Vom Steeg coached his son's AYSO team many years ago. My son was on the opposing team one Saturday morning. Our coach had to lodge a complaint with the refs that Vom Steeg was playing his son the entire game (not allowed). Miraculously, another player came up sick and his son was allowed back on the field...nice lesson for adolescent boys, when things don't go your way, just cheat. My son never played soccer again.

218: 26% of the 2012-13 Gaucho men's soccer team is from a country other than the U.S. This includes McGlynn, who is from Ireland. 229: I also know Vom Steeg from youth sports. And I agree that he should stick to college coaching. His temperament is not ideal for young children. He is better suited for college.

Please. A college coach cannot be held entirely responsible for the actions of his adult players. Vom Steeg became verbally agitated, yes, but he did not cross the line to being physical. His player did. A coach cannot control every action of adult men in a competitive game.

You should see him Coach his Little League team. Fighting with coaches and arguing with umpires. All while in front of young kids. Nice role model! Should be done at all levels.

Vom Steeg is an excellent coach if you are just looking to get winning results. He is highly competitive and highly motivated. However if you are looking for a good role model for student athletes or young kids he is going to fall woefully short. As 594 just pointed out TVS is legendary for having winning AYSO and Little League teams.....but also has developed a pattern of being "a bully coach" verbally abusing and intimidating game officials this even at the youngest age groups. He allegedly challenged a youth coach to a on field fight in 12 yr old baseball this spring this in front of children and parents,he was given a weak "slap on the wrist" from his league officials. Is this latest blemish on his resume enough to get him fired? I wouldn't think so...but at some point the Chancellor and the AD are going to have to get togeather and figure out if these "loose cannon" antics are too big of a liability for the univeirsity?
