For black bear attacks, it is recommended that you make yourself appear to be as big as possible and yell. For Grizzly bear, curl up in a ball, protecting your stomach and cover the back of your neck and head with your heads. To reduce the likelihood of being attacked, talk while hiking and if in Grizzly near territory, wearing noisemakers, such as bells, is recommended. Finally, if you see bear cubs, assume the mother is nearby, and leave the area.

Attack? The bear tried to shake hands and accidentally grazed her arm. Then, when she froze, it came and sniffed her. If that qualifies as an attack, what about the drifters on lower State? Protecting their young I suppose.

Don't bother playing dead. Bears eat carrion.

Shame, hope she makes a full recovery. Just another reminder that we need to be safe out there.

So much for "man's best friend." A few days ago we had the story where the guy got hit and killed by a train trying to save his dog--the dog lived and didn't even notice he was missing. Now the same thing with this woman and her three dogs.

This is that 10/19 story about the woman who was attacked by the bear protecting its cub. The woman survived by rolling down a hill and playing dead, while the 3 dogs she was walking ran off and lived to hike another day. One story I read said they wouldn't do anything to the momma bear because it was protecting its cub, and another said they were actively hunting the mother and would kill her if they found her. I wonder which one is true?
