Unfortunately, power-outs also apply to those with solar panels who don't also have backup batteries. Solar generated electricity fed into a damaged electrical grid would be hazardous. It's a good reason to design solar installations to include a transformer and backup batteries. Solar LED yard lights brought indoors are useful for lighting during power outs - a lot safer than candles and rechargeable.

If you might be out in your car when a quake hits, keep a few basics, mentioned above, in the trunk along with a pair of good walking shoes, especially if you dress up for work!

and remember with an earthquake, highways and broken overpasses will render the local roads impassable. Be prepared to hunker down and help and depend on your neighbors. Keep rotating your emergency food/drugs/power supplies.
