This team is a liability to UCSB. They should do like they did with the football team, and just disband it.

I agree with you, 013. Maybe the cleaning needs to start with Massari if he thinks TVS sitting out one game is TOUGH sanctions?!?! The players are just following their coach's actions. TSV is the reason there are ongoing behavior problems on the field. If he hasn't changed by now, he never will. No more games for me until this is corrected. I hope others follow suit. UCSB is a great institution and the soccer team should be a positive reflection of the university.

I think its the U's athletic dept from the top down is at fault, they cultivate the cult of being untouchable... Massari's reaction is pretty weak! "They will not take place in post season play" !! Well duh! their record makes that little non-punishment pretty silly. Von Steeg is going to miss 1 game? 1 game? that's what Massari thinks this is worth, to all the kids that go to "soccer heaven" and now have seen a slugfest (Mexicos u19), the Berkley fiasco, oh wait and every other game UCSB has lost ...Sweep, Sweep, Sweep, under the rug it goes, Sweep Sweep, Sweep......

(903p here) 932: I don't doubt that McGlynn did as you say though I didn't see it. I was at the far end of the field (right behind Zeenni) Both teams and in fact all teams I've seen play engage in some very rough contact but the event with Zeenni and McGlynn took place during a time when the ball was dead, it wasn't a matter of jockeying for position, Zeenni actually called him some profane names, complained about McGlynn's excessive contact and then threw McGlynn to the ground hitting his head on the metal cross bar at the back of the goalies box. It was worthy of Zeenni being red-carded at that point. As I stated earlier, I don't condone the loss of temper but I certainly understand it.

932, what I see on the video is a Davis player dragging down Mansker and holding him down. That's a foul in any soccer league in the world. See what you want but it doesn't change the truth!

@903-- I was at the game as well.If you look at the Presidio Sports video, you will see it was 2 UCSB players closer to the Ucsb goalkeeper. Also, did you miss the one minute delay prior to the goal when Peter McGlynn did very well to trap the UCD player at the corner flag, but while pressuring the ball, wrapped his arm around the players neck, then moved it up and popped him twice in the face. The player went down and a foul was called while the player stayed on the ground amazed at being socked, but McGlynn was lucky the linesman on that side stops at the half line and didn't see it from my angle. I'm a life long UCSB sports supporter, however I will not take kids to watch this team. It starts and ends with the COACHING. I noticed TSV was the first person in the refs face and needing to be restrained by an assistant coach. Pathetic. 26 shots and less than 1/5 on frame was your problem TSV, not the ref. Grow up.

825, only colleges with major football and basketball programs have athletic deparments that bring in more money than they send out (it's all about TV contracts). That's not UCSB.

Who knew there were so many hating racists on Edhat!! I'm shocked beyond belief. Peter McGlynn is a white Irishman, if that's too "foreign" for any of you I'd suggest all the white folks in this country head on back to England or Germany or Scandinavia. Nobody invited you here you know!!!!!!!

Agreed about the athletic scholarships going to foriegn students. Last time it was a rape that the student/athlete was convicted of. Meanwhile this scholarship could have gone to an American soccer player / scholar.

It saddens me to see so much hating on the Gauchos and Vom Steeg, he's a great coach and has taken the team far over the years. While I don't condone McGlynn's action I can understand what drove his frustration. I was at the game and watched as the UC Davis goalie threw McGlynn to the ground after a corner kick. This was apparently not witnessed by the refs. Later in the match there was another confrontation between McGlynn and Zeenni in which the Davis GK hit and pushed McGlynn. Christy (the ref) didn't take any action there either. Then in overtime two Davis players pulled Austin Mansker to the ground allowing the Davis winning goal. McGlynn watched his season and in fact his Gaucho career basically come to a halt and lost his temper. Sure he should have controlled himself but to blame this on the coach is as misplaced as McGlynn going after the ref iwho probably didn't see the blatant misconduct by Zeenni. It was a sad end to the Gauchos season but hopefully they'll be back next season strong as ever. Ole!

@775P Look into how many multi-millions of dollars is given from the Department of Defense each year to UCSB for scientific research and development. Consider the impact of science on military arms, tactics and communications since Antiquity. Consider Einstein's contribution to the nuclear age and how the military has embraced it. Now think about a soccer player who pushed someone down with no injury. What side of this equation has a more threatening future for mankind? Scientist or athlete ?

I've heard time and time again that athletics bring in more money to the schools than they take away - has anyone ever read any studies pertaining to this?

Scholarship money well spent. How much longer until universities realize that the greco-roman "scholar athlete" is a myth and most guys get free but worthless educations? Meanwhile the school spends a ton of money on facilties and such that could go to scientists not soccer players.

I was there. Suprised Peter could get near the ref with Coach Vom Steeg in the official's face. Pathetic sportsmanship again from the team. Vom Steeg needs to go. The ref actually called a decent game. Presidio sports has video of the goal (not the aftermath). So much talent and such poor coaching.
