Does anyone have that famous photo of Charles Urton with a sign he hung on the Granada after the quake? He was responsible for finishing the building after the original builder bailed, it survived while everything else fell down around it. He raced down from Mission Canyon and hung a big Urton Construction Company on the building. The beam he installed back in 1924 is still holding the place up!

Santa Barbara 's first and only eight-story building was designed by A.B. Rosenthal and constructed by Charles Urton. Urton had never attempted a steel high-rise before, so he sent away for a series of "how-to" books to assist him in completing the project. After the earthquake of 1925 did almost no damage to the new structure, Urton proudly hung a banner from the top floor of the building proclaiming: "Built by Charles M. Urton, Builder."

The worst thing that ever happened to the architecture and character of this City. Too bad most of these buildings aren't still around, they would add a lot to the monotony we are stuck with.

Sometimes it just feels like "Earthquake Weather". We are overdue for one. I just bought extra water today. It's not a bad idea to have some bottled water around. thanks for sharing, it's a good reminder.
