Pit bulls are like any other type of animal. They respond to energy we put into them. Saying that police are trained to deal with them is like saying that a fire fighter is trained in how to fight a fire. It's the criminals that the cops are dealing with that own the aggression reinforced, attack trained pits that mandate the training. It's the people at the end of the leash!

owning a pitbull doesn't make you a zoologist 286, their jaw structure is the same as any other dog. sure they're strong for their size and wight but the lock jaw thing is a myth. here's some test results from animal bite strength (notice the pitbull was NOT as strong as the rott or german shepherd): http://dogfacts.wordpress.com/2008/02/03/national-geographics-dr-brady-barrs-bite-pressure-tests/

34P, actually pitbulls jaw muscles run all the way up to their forehead giving them a stronger bite. I own and have only owned pitbulls which i love to death but it is a fact that their jaws are built different than other breeds.

116- Interesting, what you say is exactly opposite of my personal experience. Fifteen years ago I owned two trained rottweilers. I got 25% off my home owners insurance because of them. The agent at the time told me that they were the best security system around, and that the insurance company rarely got theft claims from people with Rotties. My insurance company was State Farm, in case you are wondering who, and my agent is Local in SB still.

EMUWREN1:

I have never been "dog averse". I am "aggressive dog averse" There is a big darned difference that you seem oblivious too, like most people who are knee-jerk defenders of all dogs no matter what.

Pit Bulls have a nasty reputation, out of all proportion to their percentage in the canine population. Law Enforcement officers are trained to use extra precautions around pit bulls. Do you really believe that this is in their idle imaginations? Get Real!

and here we go with the fear mongering pitbull myths again! 150, you're the winner, please do explain this genetic anomaly among canines you describe! how is the physiological make up of a pitbull jaw different than that of the rest of the dog world? spread the ignorance on thick my friend (or maybe that should read my thick friend).

That's just it - it doesn't all depend on the owners. I know some responsible dog owners who had a pit for a number of years - it was a family dog they loved very much. Without provocation, it ripped part of their childs scalp and face off. The child had reconstructive face surgery.

Good one Rodger. Pits can be fine; it depends on their owners. A Roaming. pit killed our cat who was on our property. It was heartbreaking.

Are there similarities of personalities in owners of pitbulls and boa constrictors/pythons? High risk and high denial come to mind.

One of the issues with the Pits, is that when they bite, they will not release, and the damage will be severe.

And, the Pit owners need to be the right personalty to deal with that breed of dog.

I know at the Post Office, when there is a dog bite, the owners ALWAYS say... "my dog has never ever bitten anyone before"....

We have a couple million proud responsible Pitbull owners on facebook. Doctors, firemen, mothers, all upstanding members of our communities. Ignorance is your choice. We love our family Pitbulls. By the way, state farm is my insurance company, happy to insure my friendly pure bred American Pitbull Terrier. Profiling and discrimination is ignorant. Good day

I said Pitt Bulls have been the scarey dogs since the 80's..I have never been attacked by a Piit Bull I have been attacked by two German Shepards and a Doberman. I shot the Doberman with a non lethel tear gas gun not sure how he pulled thru. One of the German shepard attacks was the result of a bad joke on my part. I am afraid of dogs I see off Leash but I look the otter way praying they won't bite. I think Pitts have just as much right to breathe the air as we do. It is the owners that make a doggie bad.

Many insurance companies will not issue or charge extra for home insurance if you own certain breeds. They must know something? I don't know if Stafford shire Terriers (AKA pit bulls) are on that list. Used to be Rottweilers, Dobermans, and even German Shepherds.

Right on, Roger.

I totally agree with you in that Pit Bulls have been on the scary & most dangerous list since the early 80's.

Check this list of places you can't have them: Belgium; Brazil; Denmark; Finland; France; Great Britain (1991); Canada; the Netherlands; New Zealand; Norway; Poland; Puerto Rico (a commonwealth of the United States); Miami-Dade County, Florida; and Sweden.

Ever wonder what the authorities here in the U.S. haven't figured out? It sure can't be the NRA this time!

Lots about Blooey, but nothing about where, as one poster asked. "We are going down around 1-2:30" isn't an answer. So, WHERE?

COMMENT 336138 helpful negative off topic

2012-10-27 07:01 AM

70P; sure all doggies are welcome. We are going down around 1-2:30. Blooey loves crowds. Sometimes dogs don't like each other, just like we humans. That may be your doggies case. We try to be real careful when meeting other dogs at first in case they dont like the smells of each other:/. Anyway, I wish this was an organized event like in cities all across the country, pittie partys everywhere, but we are doing our part by getting out there and meeting people!

069: Where in downtown Santa Barbara? And are other dogs welcome? My little rescue (from LA) dog is both afraid of and fascinated by pit bulls - he loves other dogs and is not aggressive, but I think he must have had some bad experiences with pitbulls.

Today is National Pitbull Awareness Day. Come to downtown Santa Barbara and meet "Blooey" my Pitbull. We will be shaking hands, meeting people to promote proud responsible Pitbull ownership. No thugs here, we aim to dispel myths, educate, change minds and show everyone that this breed is our wonderful family pet who just wants to be understood and loved. Blooey will be the blue Pitbull wearing a blue polo shirt !

Apple Store has got to be one of the coolest, most wonderful places to shop in all of SB. I don't know how Apple does it, but they find the most wonderful kids and grown-ups to work there. Every time I shop there or go in for help with my MacAir laptop, the experience is the same: absolutely stupendous.

I love it that I can take my dog in there. 9 times out of 10, I have my little guy in his bag, and no one knows he's there. But I have seen people with Border Collies, Bichons, Labrador retrievers, you name the breed. I say "Hurrah for Apple!"

Pit bulls are only the dog villain of the hour. In a year or so, there will be some other purported "menace" breed. Dog averse people are such downers.

I was at the Apple Store today, and there was a guy in the store (did not look to be doing anything but checking his e-mail on a display computer) with a Pit Bull with a muzzle on, and the dog was growling at people. The security guard was not interested when a shopper pointed it out to him.
